Souls of the Frozen Frontier was Enshrouded’s fourth major update, released on November 5, 2024, as version 0.7.4.0 (build 601345). It opened the Albaneve Summits, added cold-weather survival and higher-level progression, and gave settlements more inhabitants and animals. Keen Games called it the team’s “biggest update yet,” but did not publish a numerical comparison with earlier releases.

What is Souls of the Frozen Frontier?

Update #4 brought a large set of world, progression, settlement, and presentation changes to Enshrouded. Keen Games’ November 5, 2024 announcement and changelog identify it as version 0.7.4.0, build 601345. Its “biggest update yet” description was a launch-era claim from the developers, not a measured comparison of update sizes. Keen Games’ major updates index lists later releases, including Wake of the Water in November 2025 and Forging the Path in April 2026, so this is not the game’s latest update.

What did the update add to the world?

Albaneve Summits

The new northern mountain biome is reachable from the northern edges of the Nomad Highlands and Kindlewastes. Its frozen rivers and lakes, deep snow, alpine life, and aerial updrafts accompany new quests, Shroud roots, enemies, and a boss encounter. The official changelog counts around 100 new points of interest and more than 20 new or updated enemy types; it does not give a map-area measurement.

Changing weather and cold survival

Weather now shifts across Embervale: rain can fall in lower regions and become snow at higher elevations. Being wet slightly debuffs the player and can put out small fires, but it also reduces enemy perception, which can help with sneaking into camps. In the high-altitude cold, body heat drains over time; prolonged exposure without countermeasures can lead to hypothermia and death.

To manage the cold, use warmer clothing, food, consumables, campfires, and torches. World difficulty settings let players adjust body heat and how often unpleasant weather occurs. The update also adds snow footprints and turbulence that affects gliding; players can switch off gliding turbulence in the options.

How did progression and combat change?

The maximum player level increased to 35, while enemies in the new region start at level 28. The update also adds a crafting tier, new resources and stations, weapon tiers, spells, skills, perks, consumables, and building and terrain materials.

  • Armor: Nine new craftable armor sets.
  • Grappling hook: Two skill-tree abilities let players pull airborne enemies into melee range or close the gap to large foes.
  • Projectiles: Some can be parried and redirected.
  • Gliding: Turbulence changes how gliding behaves and can be disabled through the options.

What changed in settlements?

More activity around crafting NPCs

Crafting NPCs gained day-and-night routines: they can roam, rest, talk with one another, and sleep. The update also adds crafting assistants that players can find and place at secondary bases. These assistants provide the same crafting options as the crafting NPCs. New townsfolk bring dialogue, quests, and rewards.

Wildlife, farm animals, and pets

Players can tame six peaceful wildlife types and bring them to a home base. Farm animals can produce resources when their food and shelter needs are met. They may also have offspring if they have food, sheltered beds, and a free bed for the young. Six quest-found pets—three dogs and three cats—can be brought home and petted.

What visual and quality-of-life changes were included?

Keen Games revised the tone mapper, local tone mapping and exposure, bloom, atmosphere, and cloud rendering. The changelog says dynamic global illumination responds faster and describes the aim as making bright and dark scenes display more consistently. These are documented rendering changes, not published performance benchmarks.

  • Single-player worlds can now be paused; this does not apply to multiplayer.
  • UI text size is adjustable.
  • Two additional buildable altars are available in the new biome.

Why did it feel like a major expansion?

Rather than focusing on one system, Update #4 expanded several parts of the game at once: a new region with around 100 points of interest, a higher-level progression tier, environmental survival, more involved settlements, tameable wildlife and pets, and rendering and interface changes. That breadth helps explain the “biggest yet” launch description. The official notes do not establish a numerical size ranking against previous updates.
