If you want a fantasy RPG built around exploring at your own pace, choosing how to fight, and deciding when to follow the main story, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is a strong fit to consider. Bethesda describes it as an open world to explore freely; its Anniversary Edition bundles the game’s official add-ons and Creation Club content. That makes Skyrim a natural starting point for Elder Scrolls fans seeking those qualities, though it cannot guarantee every fan will enjoy it.
Why Skyrim fits the open-world fantasy RPG promise
Bethesda’s official Skyrim purchase page calls the game an open-world fantasy epic and says it is “open for you to explore any way you choose.” That is the central appeal for players who want room to wander rather than moving only from one required story beat to the next.
Bethesda contributor Joe Rybicki’s retrospective, “What Makes The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special,” published September 13, 2016, describes the northern province as a place of varied environments and discoverable locations. It also discusses quests, encounters with creatures and characters, combat choices, and crafting. This is Bethesda’s account of the game, not an independent comparison or hands-on assessment.
What you can do in Skyrim
Explore, then choose what deserves your attention
You can pursue the main story or spend time on other quests and activities. Bethesda’s retrospective emphasizes the freedom to engage with encounters as they arise or pass them by, which supports a less linear style of play.

Shape your character and approach to combat
Bethesda highlights weapons, spells, abilities, and dragon combat on its purchase page. Its retrospective adds that combat can combine different weapons and spells. These options let players build a character around the approaches they find appealing; the sources do not establish that any one build is best.
Craft and follow the world’s side paths
The retrospective also discusses crafting alongside quests and world encounters. Taken together, those activities give players alternatives when they want a break from the central story, without requiring a single preferred play style.

What the Anniversary Edition includes
Bethesda’s Anniversary Edition page says the edition includes Skyrim Special Edition, the official add-ons Dawnguard, Hearthfire, and Dragonborn, plus Creation Club content. Bethesda describes that content as more than 500 unique pieces; that is the publisher’s stated count, not an independent tally.
If you are choosing an edition, distinguish the full Anniversary Edition from the digital Anniversary Upgrade. Bethesda presents the upgrade for people who already own Skyrim Special Edition; the full edition is the relevant option if you do not already own that game. Check Bethesda’s purchase page and the selected store listing to confirm exactly what is offered for your platform and region.

Check platform and ownership before buying
Bethesda’s purchase page lists selection options for Xbox, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. Store availability and specific offers can vary by region and platform, so confirm the live listing before purchase. The page’s platform selectors do not establish technical performance or identical features across systems.
See Skyrim Anniversary Edition on Bethesda’s official page for the current edition and platform options. If you already own Skyrim Special Edition, check that the offer is the upgrade rather than a second full-game purchase.

What about The Elder Scrolls VI?
Bethesda’s franchise page lists The Elder Scrolls VI as in pre-production and does not give a release date. That status is not a basis for estimating when it will launch. If you are looking for an Elder Scrolls game to play now, Skyrim is the concrete option described by the current product page.
