Unlock companion combat abilities by spending that companion’s skill points in their own skill tree; points are earned as their Relationship Level rises. You can equip three of a companion’s five abilities for combat. Rook’s ultimates are separate: each class specialization has a unique ultimate, unlocked through Rook’s class progression.
How to unlock companion abilities
- Open the companion skill tree. From the start or pause menu, go to the Companions/Skills section or the skill-tree pages. Choose the companion whose abilities you want to develop.
- Raise that companion’s Relationship Level. Game director Corinne Busche told Game Informer on June 18, 2024 that each Relationship Level increase awards a skill point for that specific companion. Spend it in that companion’s tree to unlock combat abilities or upgrades. Points are not shared between companions.
- Spend points on ability nodes. Follow the tree to the ability you want and purchase its node when available. Check the in-game tree for current point totals and prerequisites; exact unlock requirements can vary by node.
Companions have five abilities available in their trees, but only three can be brought into combat at once, according to the Game Informer interview. Unlocking an ability and equipping it are separate steps.

How to equip abilities and set up combos
Outside combat, open the companion’s abilities and select which three to bring. EA’s official tips and tricks say you can swap abilities for Rook and companions outside combat. You can also gather party members and adjust skills at a fast-travel Beacon, as described by Xbox Wire.
When choosing a loadout, consider what each move does and whether your party can follow it with a compatible ability:

- Check conditions: Some abilities apply Sundered, Weakened, or Overwhelmed; others detonate a matching condition.
- Pair abilities: Xbox Wire’s example is Harding’s Shred followed by Neve’s Icebreaker. The ability wheel highlights compatible choices.
- Balance the party: Alongside combo potential, consider whether you need damage, control, or healing for the encounter.
How to unlock Rook’s ultimates
Rook’s ultimates are tied to class specializations, not companion skill trees. Each class has three specialization paths, and each specialization has its own ultimate. Progress through Rook’s class tree toward a specialization; the reviewed sources do not establish one universal level or point threshold for every ultimate, so use the live tree to see the requirements for your chosen path.
EA’s official guide gives these examples:

These are examples, not a complete catalog of all class ultimates. The source guide does not provide a full ranking of specializations by strength, so choose based on the playstyle and abilities shown in your tree.

Respec and other ways to find skill points
If a build is not working for you, EA says you can respec individual nodes or an entire skill tree, and change ability loadouts outside combat. That makes it possible to try another arrangement without treating your first choices as permanent.
Xbox Wire also reports that interacting with a Dreadwolf statue reveals a direction to a blue wolf statuette that grants a skill point. Keep an eye out for this while exploring. Companion quests and side content can affect later story stages, according to EA’s guidance, but the sources do not establish a fixed skill-point reward for each quest.
