Those symptoms can have different causes. The checks below match each step to the problem it can address; none is a guaranteed fix for every kind of lag.
1. Identify what kind of lag you have
Watch what happens when the problem starts, and ask your group whether they see it too. Low frame rate or local stutter points to a different problem than characters teleporting, delayed actions, or players dropping from a session.

- Low FPS or stutter on your PC: check the listed system requirements in step 3. The official network guidance does not establish that network settings fix low frame rate.
- Rubber-banding, packet loss, or disconnects: start with the Wi-Fi check in step 2, then consider the network troubleshooting steps below.
- A missing server list or trouble joining: try the relevant connection, DNS, port, and Steam session checks.
- Several players affected at once: ask whether the host or dedicated server is the shared constraint; see step 8.
This is a way to narrow the issue, not a diagnosis: Keen Games’ Network Troubleshooting article covers connection drops and server-list issues, while Steam’s Enshrouded requirements page lists PC requirements.
2. Try Ethernet if Wi-Fi is losing packets
If you are playing over Wi-Fi and experiencing high packet loss, Keen Games recommends switching to a cable connection. This is a targeted check for instability on your wireless connection—not a promise to fix low FPS, a struggling server, or every source of latency. If the problem persists over Ethernet, continue with the checks that match your symptoms.

3. Compare your PC with Enshrouded’s listed requirements
For local stutter or low frame rate, compare your PC with the specifications listed on Steam. Meeting the minimum is not proof that your machine caused a particular multiplayer problem, and being below a listed spec does not by itself establish the cause.
| Category | Steam-listed specification |
|---|---|
| Minimum OS | Windows 10 |
| Minimum memory | 16 GB RAM |
| Minimum graphics | NVIDIA GTX 1060 (6 GB VRAM), AMD RX 580 (6 GB), or Intel Arc A380 |
| Recommended OS | Windows 10 |
| Recommended memory | 16 GB RAM |
| Recommended graphics | NVIDIA RTX 2070 Super (6 GB), AMD RX 6700 XT (6 GB), or Intel Arc A770 |
| Storage | 60 GB; an SSD is recommended |
These are Steam-listed requirements, not independent performance benchmarks. Check the current Steam requirements page for any changes.
4. Check port configuration for connection problems
If you manage the server and players are having connection or discovery problems, review its port configuration rather than changing unrelated ports. Keen Games documents 15637 as the default queryPort and points administrators to Steam’s required ports. Follow the game’s network troubleshooting guidance and the Dedicated Server FAQ for the relevant configuration. Port checks address connectivity, not frame rate.
5. Clear Steam’s download cache if connection errors persist
Keen Games lists clearing the download cache as a connection troubleshooting step. In Steam, open Steam Settings → Downloads → Clear Download Cache. Steam may require you to sign in again afterward. Treat this as a check for persistent connection trouble, not a general cure for in-session lag.
6. Flush DNS; change DNS only if needed
For persistent connection issues, Keen Games suggests flushing the Windows DNS cache. Open Command Prompt and run:
ipconfig /flushdns
If the connection problem continues, its guidance lists Google DNS as an option: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. Changing DNS is not a frame-rate adjustment and is not guaranteed to improve a particular connection. Keen Games’ network article says Enshrouded multiplayer currently uses IPv4; see its Network Troubleshooting page for the stated steps.
7. Check Steam visibility and invite your friend directly
If a peer-to-peer session does not appear, check whether your Steam profile is public. If a friend cannot find or join your session, try inviting them from your Steam Friends list. These steps address session discovery and joining; they do not diagnose lag after players are already in the game. Keen Games lists both suggestions in its network troubleshooting guidance.
8. If the group is affected, check the host or dedicated server
If several players experience the same disruption, investigate the machine and connection hosting the session. Keen Games says recommended dedicated-server hardware depends strongly on the number of active players. Its published specifications are recommendations, not a guarantee of smooth play.
| Active players | Recommended CPU | Memory and storage | Network guidance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4–6 | 6 cores / 12 threads, 3.2 GHz Intel Core i7 or equivalent AMD | 16 GB RAM; SSD storage | 2 Mbit/s upload per player; download roughly matching upload |
| 16 | 8 cores / 16 threads, 3.7 GHz Intel Core i7 or equivalent AMD | 16 GB RAM | 2 Mbit/s upload per player; download roughly matching upload |
These recommendations come from Keen Games’ Recommended Server Specifications, dated January 12, 2024. The same article recommends 2 Mbit/s upload per active player and roughly matching download capacity. Consider whether the problem affects everyone, how many players are active, and whether the host’s hardware and upload capacity meet the guidance. The Dedicated Server FAQ, dated February 21, 2025, says an idle dedicated server uses about 4.4 GB of physical RAM, with up to 100 MB more per player; Keen Games states total use is not expected to exceed 6 GB.
When a dedicated server may help
A dedicated server is an option if your group wants to play without the peer-to-peer host being online. It changes who provides the server hardware and network, so its location relative to players and available capacity may matter; it is not automatically a latency fix. Keen Games says it partners with GPortal for rentals and that other providers can also be used. Its public information does not establish comparative provider latency, price, location, or performance. See the Enshrouded FAQ for hosting information.
