Path of Exile 2 mapping is the Atlas endgame loop: choose an area, put a Waystone into the Map Device to enter it, then complete the Map to pursue rewards and progress into further content. The Atlas determines where you can go and offers progression choices; Waystone modifiers and, in versions that support them, Tablets can change the challenge and the encounters you meet.
Mapping rules have changed across updates, so figures and mechanics below are tied to the official patch notes that introduced them—not guaranteed descriptions of the live game on October 8, 2026.
How the mapping loop works
- Choose an Atlas area. Your Atlas is the endgame map and progression layer. Select an area that fits your current goal and the Waystone you can use.
- Use a Waystone in the Map Device. A Waystone is the resource that opens a Map; its tier and modifiers affect the level of challenge and potential reward profile.
- Enter and complete the Map. Defeat its monsters and pursue its objectives, including bosses or special encounters where available.
- Use drops and Atlas progression to continue. Waystones, Atlas passives, and access to further encounters can shape what you run next. The precise drop rules and unlock conditions depend on the game version.
What Waystone tier and modifiers mean
Waystone tier is a key choice because it relates to the Map’s challenge and progression level. A higher tier is not automatically the best choice: weigh it against your character’s ability to handle the area, the modifier risks, and your current objective.
In the 0.3.0 patch notes, Grinding Gear Games described Waystone modifiers as combining a downside, a specific upside, and additional Waystone drop chance. This gives modifiers a risk-versus-reward role rather than making them a simple difficulty slider. The exact modifier pool and drop behavior should be checked against the applicable version’s notes: Content Update 0.3.0 — Path of Exile 2: The Third Edict.

How Waystone sustain worked in the 0.2.0 update
Waystone sustain means finding enough Waystones to keep opening Maps, including higher-tier ones. The 0.2.0 notes described a revised drop system, but did not promise that every run would replace the Waystone spent. Under that update, Waystones could not drop below the tier of the Map being run; final Map Bosses dropped a Waystone one tier higher. Final Map Bosses and the final naturally occurring Rare Monsters in Tier 1 Maps had a 100% Waystone drop chance, with the chance scaling down at higher tiers. The notes said appropriate Waystone suffixes and Atlas investment could guarantee the chance at higher tiers. These are specifically 0.2.0 rules, not an assurance of current behavior: Content Update 0.2.0 — Path of Exile 2: Dawn of the Hunt.
The same 0.2.0 notes said Doryani carried up to 10 Waystones, at Tier 1 or one tier below the highest tier completed. Treat that stock and tier description as patch-specific as well. If you are short on Waystones, consult the current official notes before assuming an older drop rule or vendor supply still applies.

How the Atlas shapes progression
The Atlas is more than a list of areas: its passives and access systems can direct your mapping toward ordinary progression, Map Boss rewards, Citadels, Pinnacle encounters, or other special content. Their eligibility conditions and access methods have been reworked, so use the patch notes for the version you are playing rather than carrying forward an old checklist.
For example, the 0.3.0 notes changed endgame access, set conditions for earning Map Boss Atlas Passive points, and moved several Pinnacle encounters to splinter-based access with selectable difficulty. What Tablets change
Tablets let players target content on Maps, but their function and limits changed between updates. In the 0.3.1 announcement, Grinding Gear Games said Tablets applied directly to Maps, allowing players to apply desired content to every Map they ran if they had enough Tablets. The update also reduced the maximum amount of content on one Map and strengthened Tablet modifiers: Major Endgame Changes in Patch 0.3.1 for Path of Exile 2.
The 0.4.0 notes later capped Tablets at four modifiers and required defeating the Arbiter of Ash to craft them beyond two modifiers. That is the limit and gate stated in that update, not a confirmed October 2026 rule. Map behavior changed in 0.4.0
Map monster scaling also received a significant change in 0.4.0. Rather than scaling pack size with tier, Maps increased non-unique monster Effectiveness, which affects monster life, experience, and item quantity, according to the update notes. This is a patch-specific description of that system and should not be assumed to cover later changes: the 0.4.0 patch notes.

- For steady Atlas progress: choose a tier and area you can complete reliably, then use the progression options available in your current version.
- For Waystone replenishment: prioritize eligible drops and modifiers only after checking current sustain rules; the 0.2.0 drop percentages are historical patch rules, not a guarantee for today.
- For a particular encounter or reward: consider relevant Atlas passives and Tablets, while accounting for Tablet supply and the limits in the current patch.
- For boss or Pinnacle progression: verify current eligibility and access requirements before spending resources, since these systems have been reworked.
Do you need to complete every Atlas node at every Map tier?
The available official update notes describe changing Atlas systems but do not establish a universal rule that every node at every tier must be completed. A community forum thread titled “Atlas map nodes completing” records a player asking this question, but it is not authoritative mechanical guidance: the community discussion. Check the current in-game objective and official notes for the exact completion conditions in your version.
Check the version before following a mapping guide
The official patch index search result listed 0.4.0i dated March 24, 2026; the cited material does not establish whether a newer mapping-related update existed by October 8, 2026.
