To use cheats in Europa Universalis V, launch the game with debug mode enabled, then open the in-game console using the key that matches your keyboard layout. On Steam, add -debug_mode in the game’s Launch Options. Console commands can change resources, stability, wars, religion, and other parts of a campaign, but their names and syntax can shift with patches. Treat examples below as starting points, not a guaranteed current command list.
Enable debug mode
The game released for PC on 4 November 2025. The activation steps below come from community guides rather than an official Paradox command manual, so launcher labels or behavior may change between game updates.

Steam
- In your Steam Library, right-click Europa Universalis V and choose Properties.
- Under General, find Launch Options and enter
-debug_mode. - Close Properties and start the game from Steam.
Non-Steam Windows installation
A community guide documents a shortcut method for Windows: create a shortcut to eu5.exe, open its Properties, and append -debug_mode to the shortcut’s Target field, outside the closing quotation mark if the path is quoted. Launch the game through that shortcut. This route is not documented here for other operating systems or launchers.
Open the console
Press the backtick key (`) in-game. The key varies by keyboard layout; community guides also suggest trying Shift+2, §, ~, ^, °, or ². These alternatives are not confirmed for every layout or build, and some keyboards produce a different character from the printed key. If one does not open the console, test the other likely layout-specific keys.

Once the console is open, enter a command and its required arguments, then submit it. A guide reports that Tab can show possible arguments; another describes command completion and history navigation. If those features do not respond, they may not be supported in your current version.
Example commands to look up
Community command references include the following names. The references do not establish that every entry remains available or has unchanged syntax in the current build. Check the spelling, capitalization, and required arguments against a version-matched reference before using a command; a command may require a country tag, event identifier, or other value.

This is a set of examples, not an exhaustive inventory. Do not assume a command works simply because it appears in an older guide.
Choose a command reference carefully
Command inventories are patch-sensitive. One curated list labels itself for EU5 1.3 Pavia and warns that its underlying wiki table may not yet include later commands. A Steam Community guide consulted for examples currently carries a removal notice and an incompatibility notice. Neither should be treated as a complete, authoritative reference for every current build. Compare the guide’s stated game version with yours, and look for exact syntax and argument descriptions rather than relying on a command name alone.

For context, Paradox describes EU5 as a historical grand-strategy game spanning 500 years, beginning in 1337 and combining population, trade, government, research, and military systems. Those connected systems are why a command that changes one value can have wider campaign consequences.

A secondary guide reports that debug mode disables achievements for the session and that the console is unavailable in Ironman. The sources available do not include official confirmation of those effects, so do not rely on debug mode for an achievement run; check the behavior in your current version before beginning a campaign where achievements matter.

If the console will not open
- Check the launch argument: confirm
-debug_modeis in Steam’s Launch Options, or that the Windows shortcut points toeu5.exeand includes the argument. - Try the layout alternatives: backtick is the commonly described key, but the correct console key depends on keyboard layout.
- Check the game mode: the secondary guide says the console is unavailable in Ironman.
- Verify command syntax: if the console opens but a command fails, check its current spelling, capitalization, argument order, and the game version covered by the reference.
- Recheck after patches: updates can rename, remove, add, or alter commands and their arguments.
