If Elden Ring is crashing, freezing, stuttering, or displaying visual glitches on PC, start by updating the Steam version, then check ray tracing and isolate mouse-control utilities if your framerate is unstable. Bandai Namco’s May 28, 2026 update addresses some freezes, unexpected exits, and rendering abnormalities, but it does not promise to fix every PC problem.
Start with the latest Steam update
Bandai Namco’s latest located PC update, dated May 28, 2026, targets Steam and lists App Ver. 1.16.2 and Regulation Ver. 1.16.1. The publisher says it updates some PC software and fixes freezing, unexpected exits, and rendering abnormalities in certain environments. It does not identify every affected configuration or claim to resolve all crashes. See the official Version 1.16.2 notice.
- In Steam, let any pending Elden Ring update finish downloading and installing.
- Launch the game and check its displayed App Ver. and Regulation Ver. against the update notice.
- Test the same activity or area where the problem occurred, if you can reproduce it.
Check ray tracing if performance is unstable
Bandai Namco warns that ray tracing may be unintentionally enabled in some PC versions and can cause unstable performance. From the title screen or in-game, open System > Graphics > Ray Tracing Quality and turn it off as a reversible diagnostic. If the setting was already off, this check does not explain the symptom.
The publisher’s Version 1.09 notes also warn that ray tracing can affect frame rate and resolution. They advise checking the published hardware requirements and updating graphics drivers if the game will not start or becomes unstable with ray tracing enabled. These are the publisher’s ray-tracing specifications from 2023, not a guarantee of stable performance or a diagnosis of a particular crash. They do not establish that a hardware upgrade is necessary.
Isolate mouse-control utilities when the framerate is unstable
If the main issue is erratic or unstable framerate, temporarily deactivate third-party applications that control mouse behavior, then compare performance. Bandai Namco identified these applications as a possible cause in its Version 1.14 notes. This is a targeted test, not a guaranteed fix for crashes, freezes, or visual corruption.

Verify game files only for the documented activity warning
If “Inappropriate activity detected” appears even though you have not cheated, Bandai Namco’s Version 1.14 notes direct players to verify the game files before restarting. In Steam, open the game’s Properties and use the installed-files integrity check, then restart the game. This instruction addresses that specific message; it is not a universal crash-repair step.
What is known about the “lighting bug”?
The May 2026 update notice acknowledges rendering abnormalities in some environments and says the update fixes them, but it does not call them a lighting bug or specify the cause, affected graphics cards, lighting conditions, or a reproduction. The official sources do not establish a separate, generally confirmed Elden Ring lighting defect.

Intel’s December 26, 2024 release notes list stuttering in certain Elden Ring DX12 scenes as a fixed issue. The same page separately mentions lighting corruption in night scenes for F1 24; that is not evidence of an Elden Ring lighting problem. See Intel’s graphics driver release notes.

The official update notice does not provide a per-device diagnosis, crash code, or additional step-by-step fix for persistent symptoms. Before seeking support, record details that distinguish one failure from another:

- Whether the game crashes to desktop, freezes while the rest of the PC remains responsive, stutters, or shows visual corruption.
- When the issue began and whether it occurs in a particular area or under a repeatable condition.
- The game’s App Ver. and Regulation Ver., your GPU model and driver version, and the Ray Tracing Quality setting.
- Any overlays or third-party mouse-control utilities running, and whether temporarily disabling them changes the symptom.
- For a visual issue, what the artifact looks like and when it appears.
Keeping the symptom specific matters: the publisher’s available notes point to different checks for unstable ray-tracing performance, framerate instability, a particular anti-cheat warning, and some rendering abnormalities. They do not establish one cause shared by every PC crash or visual report.
