In the cited PS4 critic snapshot, Metacritic lists an 81 Metascore from 113 reviews; an individual GameSpot review scored it 8/10. Steam’s Windows Edition user rating is a separate, changeable measure. Reviews highlighted the open-world journey and its companions, while some criticism centered on combat depth and how the story is presented.
What did critics think of Final Fantasy XV?
The overall reception was favorable in the cited PS4 critic-review snapshot. That does not mean every reviewer agreed: the snapshot records a mix of positive and mixed reviews, and an aggregate score is not a substitute for an individual review’s reasoning.

- Metacritic’s PS4 critic snapshot shows an 81 Metascore, classified as “Generally Favorable,” from 113 reviews: 89 positive, 20 mixed and zero negative. It is a platform-specific snapshot, not a permanent score or a rating for every version.
- GameSpot reviewer Peter Brown gave the game 8/10, labeled “Great.” This is one outlet’s review score, not the Metacritic aggregate.
- Steam’s Windows Edition listing showed 82% positive English user reviews among 17,949 reviews in the retrieved snapshot. Steam’s user-review percentage changes over time and measures player sentiment, not critics’ scores.
These figures should not be ranked as if they used the same method: one is a PS4 critic aggregate, one is an individual critic score, and one is Windows Edition user-review sentiment.
What did reviewers praise and criticize?
Time’s Matt Peckham reviewed the game on November 28, 2016, describing it as an open-world road trip with a close-knit party. His review praised the setting, the characters’ interactions, diversions along the way and Yoko Shimomura’s soundtrack. He also argued that the combat offered few mid-game surprises and that additional story context could help explain the world.

- Armiger unleashed: After you collect all 13 royal arms, a more action oriented mode of the Armiger is unlocked
- Royal vessel: The boat from FFXV is now a controllable vehicle; The same body of water (between Cape Caem and Altissia) can now be freely explored
Peckham summed up the narrative as “a rambling Boys’ Own romp with unusually strong characters and at times even Shakespearean poignancy.” That is his characterization in Time’s November 28, 2016 review, not a consensus description or a promise that every player will respond to the story in the same way.
The criticism about story context refers to the broader franchise presentation: Peckham said the Brotherhood anime series or the film Kingsglaive supplies useful background. They are optional context, not prerequisites established by the review. The central trade-off in his assessment is between an appealing journey and companions on one hand, and combat variety and narrative presentation on the other.

Which version and platform are the scores about?
Platform and edition matter when using a review to guide a purchase. The 81 Metascore above is specifically the PS4 critic snapshot; the Steam percentage is for the Windows Edition. Neither number should be silently applied to a different platform or edition.
PlayStation’s listing identifies FINAL FANTASY XV Royal Edition for PS4 and gives its release date as March 6, 2018. It says the Royal Pack is available separately and that items included in the Royal Edition are also available individually. Check the current regional store listing to confirm what a particular offer includes and its price.
