The Minstrel’s Ballad: Hades’s Elegy is the official name of Hades Extreme, the level-80 trial added in Final Fantasy XIV Patch 5.1. To unlock it, finish the Shadowbringers main scenario and speak to the Minstreling Wanderer in the Crystarium at X:7.5, Y:12.5 as a level-80 Disciple of War or Magic. Square Enix’s official expansion page introduces the encounter with the line, “Hearken unto a requiem for a hero fallen.”
How do I unlock Hades Extreme?
- Complete the Shadowbringers main scenario quest, “Shadowbringers.”
- Reach level 80 on a Disciple of War or Magic.
- Speak to the Minstreling Wanderer in the Crystarium at X:7.5, Y:12.5. Square Enix’s Patch 5.1 notes say this unlocks the duty.
The Patch 5.1 notes place the trial in the Raid Finder. That is the published queue location from 2019; check the live duty listing for current placement.
What item level and party do you need?
Square Enix’s Patch 5.1 entry conditions specify level 80, average item level 450 or higher, eight players, and a 60-minute time limit. The notes say the item-level restriction does not apply when registering as a full party. These are the duty’s published historical entry requirements, not a recommendation for the gear level needed to clear it comfortably today; confirm the current listing before queueing.
The Lodestone duty database lists the standard party composition as two tanks, two healers, and four DPS. It also lists Echo after total-party incapacitation and says Phoenix Down cannot be used in the duty. These are duty rules, distinct from a strategy for resolving a specific mechanic.

How many totems does Hades Extreme give?
In its October 30, 2019 Letter from the Producer LIVE Part LV digest, Square Enix said the encounter’s theatrics made it longer than a typical Extreme trial, so it increased the reward to two totems per completion. The Lodestone duty database also lists Allagan Tomestones of Poetics and a treasure coffer, but does not provide a dependable item-by-item reward breakdown in its entry; check the current in-game reward display for specific drops.
What happens after a wipe?
Square Enix’s Patch 5.2 notes describe a duty-specific Echo increase for qualifying restarts: 5% after a restart, rising by another 5% with each restart to a maximum of 25%. A restart after an attempt lasting less than three minutes does not grant the increase. This is the rule documented in Patch 5.2; consult the live duty behavior if you need confirmation for the current game build.

What should you know about the encounter?
A community overview characterizes Hades’s Elegy as a five-phase encounter and highlights Ancient Double, Universal Manipulation, and the final phase. That overview is useful for orientation, but it does not establish a complete mechanic timeline or reliable callout sequence. For mechanic-by-mechanic resolutions, use a detailed guide that matches your party’s intended approach and check that its strategy is current. In particular, do not assume that a short overview is enough to resolve Universal Manipulation safely.
