You cannot produce new coal ore with a standard Survival farm: coal ore generates naturally in the Overworld and must be mined. If by “farming coal” you mean keeping a renewable supply of furnace fuel, grow trees and smelt their logs into charcoal. These are separate methods for separate needs.
Coal ore and charcoal are different resources
Mined coal comes from coal ore. Charcoal is made by smelting logs, so it offers a renewable fuel route without creating coal ore. Minecraft’s official Block of the Week article describes coal ore and notes that Fortune can increase the coal drop from mining it.

How to gather coal ore
- Explore generated Overworld terrain and look for exposed coal ore or deposits revealed while mining.
- Mine the ore with a pickaxe. The official Minecraft coal article says Fortune can increase the coal drop.
- Collect the coal and use it as needed; if your aim is an ongoing fuel supply rather than coal itself, use the charcoal method below.
What mining level should you use?
There is no exact current best Y level established here across both Java and Bedrock, so avoid treating a single coordinate as universal advice. For historical context only, Mojang’s Java snapshot notes for 21w37a said coal generated above Y=0, with a strong bias toward Y=96 and above, and that its generation had reduced air exposure. That is snapshot-specific guidance, not a verified recommendation for current releases.
Minecraft’s official coal article also reported an average of about 140 coal ore per chunk when it was published in 2017. That dated estimate is not a guarantee for current world generation.

How to make a renewable charcoal supply
- Grow trees and harvest their logs. Replant saplings so the supply can continue.
- Place logs in a furnace’s input slot and fuel in its fuel slot, then smelt them into charcoal.
- Use the charcoal as furnace fuel, or repeat the tree-growing and smelting cycle to replenish it.
The beginner guide How to Play Minecraft says one piece of coal or charcoal smelts eight items. Its discussion also notes that wood-fuel efficiency comparisons differ between Java and Bedrock, so do not assume every wood-fuel setup behaves identically across editions.

- Need coal specifically? Mine coal ore; charcoal is a different item.
- Need renewable furnace fuel? Grow trees and smelt logs into charcoal.
- Looking for an efficient mining coordinate? Check advice for your edition and game version. The historical 21w37a Java coordinates are not a current universal rule.
