Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →First identify whether Suikoden I & II HD Remaster: Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars freezes or closes during play, or whether the Switch displays “The game card could not be read” at launch. Those are different problems: Konami has patched some documented in-game freezes and errors, while its reinstall guidance applies specifically to the game-card read message. There is no confirmed universal fix for every Switch crash.
What kind of crash are you seeing?
Note exactly what happens and when. A freeze during a battle or event, the game closing to the HOME Menu, an error code, and a launch-time game-card read message are not interchangeable symptoms. Record the wording of any error and the action or location just before it appeared; that information helps distinguish a known issue from an unrelated problem.

- Freeze during play: The image or game stops responding during a battle, event, or other activity.
- Software closes: The game exits to the HOME Menu, with or without an error code.
- Game-card read error at launch: The Switch says “The game card could not be read.” Use the separate steps below for this specific message.
Update the game before troubleshooting further
Check that the game is updated. Konami’s official Ver.1.0.3 notes say it “Optimized the game’s stability” and list fixes for particular freezes and errors in both games. Those include a Suikoden I Zombie Dragon event under bag-full conditions, a freeze when a particular enemy dodged while battle double-speed was enabled, and a Suikoden II Medicine Rune battle error involving empty party slots. The notes show that Konami fixed documented bugs; they do not establish that one of them is causing your crash or that this update resolves every crash. Read Konami’s official issue notice and Ver.1.0.3 notes.
If Switch says “The game card could not be read”
Konami treats this as a game launch or read problem, not as an in-game crash. Its support article, updated February 5, 2026, says the cause may be the console or corrupted installed data. For this message, Konami recommends deleting the installed software through the Switch Data Management options and reinstalling it. Konami says this procedure does not delete save data. If you use a Game Card, carefully cleaning its contacts may also help; avoid scratching them. Follow Konami’s game-card read-error guidance.

If the game still freezes or closes during play
The official sources do not provide a universal diagnosis or guaranteed fix for an in-play crash. If updating does not resolve it, gather details before contacting support:
- The game version shown on your Switch.
- Your Switch system version.
- Whether the game freezes, closes to HOME, or shows an error code; copy the exact code or message.
- Which game you were playing, where it happened, and what you did immediately before the problem.
- Whether other software works normally.
Use those details when contacting Konami or Nintendo support. Do not assume a particular hardware fault based on a single crash. The published fixes are tied to specific conditions and do not establish the cause of an unrelated player’s problem.
Which Switch version is this?
Nintendo’s US listing gives March 6, 2025 as the release date and 7.2 GB as the digital file size; Nintendo UK lists a Game Card edition. Nintendo also labels Switch 2 compatibility “Supported – Game behavior is consistent with Nintendo Switch.” That compatibility statement is not a guarantee that the game is free of bugs. See Nintendo’s product listing.
