If Fortnite feels delayed, stutters, or freezes, check the game’s network display first, then test your connection and change one thing at a time. In a match, open Settings > Game UI and enable Net Debug Stats (sometimes labeled “Net Debug Stat”). The HUD shows ping and packet loss: Epic says red bars indicate packet loss, while a solid white line indicates none. Menu wording can vary by game and support-page version. Epic’s network-display instructions and packet-loss guidance describe these indicators.
What “choke,” lag, ping and packet loss mean
“Choke” is a player description, not a separate metric defined in Epic’s troubleshooting guidance. It may mean stuttering, delayed movement, or brief freezing, so use the HUD and repeatable tests to find evidence rather than assuming one specific cause.
- Ping or latency is the time, in milliseconds, for data to travel to the Fortnite server and back. A higher value can mean more delay, but ping alone does not describe the whole connection.
- Packet loss means some data sent between your device and the server fails to arrive. It can disrupt play even if average ping looks reasonable.
- Jitter is variation in latency. A wide spread between minimum and maximum ping readings can indicate an inconsistent route.
Epic identifies congestion, routing, and the selected matchmaking subregion as factors in latency. Matchmaking can use different subregions within a region, so a regional endpoint test is useful evidence, not a measurement of the exact server used by every match. See Epic’s latency and ping troubleshooting guidance.
Check for a Fortnite service problem first
Check Epic Games Server Status when the problem starts. If Fortnite has a service-wide issue, changing your router settings will not restore the service; wait for Epic to resolve it and retest.

Read Fortnite’s network display in a match
- From the lobby, open Settings and go to the Game UI tab.
- Enable Net Debug Stats (the label may appear as “Net Debug Stat”), apply the setting, and enter a match.
- Watch the HUD while the problem is happening. Note ping and whether packet-loss bars appear; Epic describes red bars as packet loss and a solid white line as no packet loss.
A match is needed for meaningful in-game readings. The display confirms a symptom, but does not identify whether its cause is your Wi-Fi, router, ISP route, or a Fortnite-side issue. If the symptom is intermittent, note when it happens and the mode or experience where you see it.
Test the route from your computer
Epic provides regional ping endpoints and recommends sending 50 pings. On Windows 11, open Command Prompt and run the relevant regional endpoint in this format:

On macOS, open Terminal and use:
ping -c 50 ping-va.ds.on.epicgames.com
The example endpoint is for the Virginia region; substitute the endpoint for the region relevant to you, using Epic’s regional endpoint list and instructions. Record average latency, packet loss, and the minimum and maximum readings. Repeat the test under comparable conditions—first with the network relatively idle, then when the usual problem occurs if other devices are using the connection.
Epic’s troubleshooting guidance says packet loss should be 0% and that consistently more than about 1% can cause in-game problems. This is Epic’s practical support threshold, not a universal networking law or a measured rate across Fortnite players.

Important limitation: this endpoint test uses ICMP, while Fortnite gameplay uses UDP. Some networks treat ICMP differently, so a normal-looking command result does not rule out a problem affecting gameplay traffic. Tell your ISP about that protocol difference when you share the results.
Use the symptoms to choose your next check
| What you observe | What it may indicate | Next useful check |
|---|---|---|
| Packet-loss bars appear in the Fortnite HUD | Data is being lost on the connection to the server; the HUD does not locate the cause. | Compare wired Ethernet with Wi-Fi if possible, collect endpoint results, and contact your ISP if it persists. |
| Endpoint ping is high across repeated tests | Congestion or routing may be involved; the match’s selected subregion can also affect latency. | Retest under the same network load, note the endpoint and in-game ping, then discuss the results with your ISP. |
| Idle tests are fine, but play worsens when others use the network | The home connection may be congested under load, particularly during uploads or other heavy traffic. | Pause large transfers and streams, then compare the test and match under the same conditions. |
| ICMP test looks normal but Fortnite still shows packet loss | The test may not reflect UDP gameplay traffic. | Share both the game evidence and the ICMP-versus-UDP distinction with your ISP. |
| Wi-Fi is unstable but Ethernet works better | The wireless link, interference, or signal strength may be contributing. | Use a suitable Ethernet connection if your device can be wired to the router. |
Try home-network fixes in order
- Restart the modem and router. Power them off, wait briefly, then turn them back on and allow the connection to return before retesting.
- Try Ethernet. If you normally play over Wi-Fi, connect the device to the router with an Ethernet cable where practical. This tests whether the wireless link is part of the problem; it cannot fix ISP routing or a service outage.
- Reduce competing traffic. Pause large downloads, uploads, and video streams while playing. Uploads can be especially disruptive on connections with limited upload capacity. Compare results at idle and under the load that usually triggers the issue.
- Check router placement and Wi-Fi bands. Move the router to a more open, central location if possible. Epic notes that 2.4 GHz generally reaches farther but may be more crowded, while 5 GHz can be faster over shorter distances. Test the bands available to your device rather than assuming one will always be better.
- Check firmware and traffic controls. Install router firmware updates recommended by its manufacturer. If the router offers QoS, Smart Queue, or a gaming mode, consult its instructions and test the feature; names and behavior vary by router.
- Consider router replacement only with evidence. A faulty or inadequate router can contribute to connection trouble, but replacement will not correct ISP routing or a Fortnite service issue.
These are the reversible checks Epic recommends in its latency troubleshooting guide.

PC-only option: Epic’s client-tick argument
Epic’s packet-loss troubleshooting page lists -limitclientticks as a PC troubleshooting step. In Epic Games Launcher, open the Fortnite settings and add it to the game’s additional command-line arguments, then launch Fortnite and check whether the symptom changes. This is an Epic-listed option, not a guaranteed fix, and it is not a console setting. See Epic’s packet-loss instructions.

- the regional endpoint you tested and the 50-ping results, including average, minimum, maximum, and packet loss;
- the in-game ping and whether the Net Debug Stats display showed packet loss;
- whether the issue occurred on Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or both, and whether it appeared at idle or under load;
- the Fortnite mode or experience where you noticed it; and
- that the endpoint test uses ICMP but Fortnite gameplay traffic uses UDP.
Epic notes that congestion and routing—including congestion at internet exchanges—can affect latency, so a problem may be beyond your home network. If the ISP cannot resolve it, contact Epic Player Support with the same evidence and the specific experience affected.
