Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf League of Legends displays “There was an unexpected error with the login session. Please try again,” sign out, close any leftover Riot and League processes in Windows Task Manager, then reopen the client and sign in again. Riot recommends closing KillerServiceNetwork.exe as an additional step if the error continues.
Check that this is the login-session error
This fix is for the specific message “There was an unexpected error with the login session. Please try again.” Riot associates it with another League client instance stuck in the background. The steps below follow Riot’s login-session troubleshooting guide, dated May 31, 2026.

Other League errors can mention an unexpected problem but have different causes, such as patching failures, server overload, ISP issues, overlay conflicts, or Windows errors. If your message is different, use Riot’s error-code guide, dated May 19, 2025, to identify the relevant troubleshooting path.
Sign out and close the stuck client processes
- When the error appears, press Alt+F4. Choose Sign out, not Exit.
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Windows Task Manager.
- End every instance of
RiotClientServices.exeandLeagueofLegends.exethat appears in the process list. - Reopen League of Legends or the Riot Client, then sign in again.
If the error persists
Repeat the sign-out and process-closing steps. This time, also end KillerServiceNetwork.exe if it is running, then reopen the client and try signing in again. Riot suggests this because the program might prioritize bandwidth for online streams and leave less bandwidth available for League; that is a possible explanation, not a confirmed cause for every player.

If you still cannot sign in
Check Riot’s error-code and solution guide if you see a different message. For other connection symptoms, Riot’s League connectivity support catalog has separate guidance for DNS, routers, repair tools, and related issues. If those resources do not resolve the problem, submit a Player Support ticket.
For this exact login-session message, Riot’s recommended steps use the client and Task Manager; the guidance does not call for a purchase, reinstall, DNS change, or disabling security software.
