“Megalovania” played because jugglers and acrobats performed to a cover of the Undertale track during Pope Francis’s General Audience at the Vatican on January 5, 2022. Contemporary reports confirm the unusual musical accompaniment, but do not establish who chose it—or that the Pope requested it.
What happened at the Vatican?
During entertainment near the end of the January 5, 2022 General Audience, circus performers including jugglers and acrobats performed to a cover of “Megalovania.” The event took place at the Vatican. Shacknews reported the performance the following day, identifying the music as a track from Toby Fox’s 2015 game Undertale: Shacknews’s account of the performance.
A video description hosted by Wikimedia Commons identifies the troupe as Rony Roller Circus, but that identification comes from the description of an explanatory video, not a primary event record: the Commons video page.
Why was “Megalovania” the song?
The reason is not established in the contemporary reports. They do not say who selected the cover, identify the musicians or arrangement, or indicate that Pope Francis asked for the song. The confirmed detail is the performance itself—not the Pope’s role in choosing its soundtrack.

Did MatPat’s Undertale gift explain it?
Matthew “MatPat” Patrick reportedly gave Pope Francis a copy of Undertale during a 2016 Vatican visit. That makes for an appealing connection, but the report does not link the gift to the song choice six years later. It is an online theory, not a verified explanation. Shacknews reported the gift as background; Know Your Meme also covered the viral reaction the next day: Know Your Meme’s January 6, 2022 report.
Why did the clip surprise people?
“Megalovania” is strongly associated with Undertale, so hearing a cover accompany a circus act at a papal audience was an unexpected collision of video-game culture and a formal public event. Know Your Meme captured the immediate reaction with the question, “WHY WAS MEGALOVANIA IN TODAY’S GENERAL AUDIENCE FROM THE POPE WHY?” The surprise is easy to understand; the explanation for the song remains unknown.
