Super Mario Bros. Wonder Was Reportedly Unable to Launch Offline on Switch 2 After a Firmware Update

GamesRadar reported an offline launch problem with a physical Wonder card on Switch 2 after firmware 20.2.0, but the evidence does not show that every console or copy was affected.

A July 2025 report said that a physical copy of Super Mario Bros. Wonder stopped launching offline on some Switch 2 setups after a system update. GamesRadar reported a claim from physical-media watchdog DoesItPlay? about firmware versions 20.1.1 and 20.2.0, and said its own writer reproduced an unskippable update prompt on an offline North American console. That is evidence about the tests described—not proof that every copy or Switch 2 was affected.

What was reported about Wonder and Switch 2 firmware?

In a report published July 24, 2025, GamesRadar quoted DoesItPlay? as saying it had confirmed that Nintendo disabled offline playability for the Super Mario Bros. Wonder card between Switch 2 system software versions 20.1.1 and 20.2.0. GamesRadar said the watchdog’s testing involved an EU card; separately, the publication reported reproducing an unskippable update prompt with a physical copy on an offline North American Switch 2. GamesRadar’s report attributes the claim to the watchdog and describes the publication’s own test.

The report does not establish how many consoles or cards were affected, whether the result applied beyond those setups, or whether a later system update changed the behavior. It also does not establish why the prompt appeared. There is no Nintendo explanation of this reported incident in the official materials cited here, so it would be inaccurate to say Nintendo deliberately blocked the game or that the issue is universal.

What Nintendo says about playing physical games offline

Nintendo’s general guidance says a standard physical game card contains the game data and can be played without an internet connection. That broad rule is consistent with how physical games normally work, but it does not explain or disprove the Switch 2 behavior described in the report. Nintendo’s offline-play FAQ also distinguishes standard cards from other formats:

Super Mario Bros. Wonder : Standard - Nintendo Switch [Digital Code]
  • Find wonder in the Flower Kingdom in the next side-scrolling Super Mario adventure
  • Collect Wonder Flowers for surprising, game-changing effects like pipes coming alive, an enemy stampede, and much, much more
  • Choose from the largest cast of characters in a side-scrolling Mario game, including Mario, Luigi, Peach, Daisy and other favorites
  • Ease into the action with four different-colored Yoshis and Nabbit who can’t take damage
  • Discover new power-ups like Elephant Fruit, which transforms Mario and friends into an elephant that can swing its trunk and spray water
  • Standard physical game cards: The game data is on the card, and Nintendo says these can be played offline.
  • Game-Key Cards: They require an internet connection for an initial download.
  • Downloaded games: Nintendo says the virtual game card must first be set on the console while online; afterward, the game can be played offline.

The Game-Key Card and digital-game setup rules are separate from the reported claim about a standard physical Wonder card. They should not be treated as proof of the cause of its reported launch prompt.

Does the latest Wonder game update address the report?

Nintendo of America’s update history lists Super Mario Bros. Wonder version 1.2.1 as released on April 15, 2026. Its note says adjustments and fixes were made to improve the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition gameplay experience. Nintendo also says a game update must be applied to use the game’s internet features and that Nintendo Switch Online is required for online features. The note does not say the main game generally needs an internet connection to launch, nor does it identify a fix for the 2025 firmware-related report. Nintendo’s update history

What to do if your physical copy shows an update prompt offline

The report does not establish a confirmed remedy. If you encounter the prompt, record the console’s system version, the game’s version, and whether the console is online, then check Nintendo’s official update information. A prompt relating to downloaded software and a required physical card is a different issue from the one reported for Wonder; Nintendo’s troubleshooting page for that prompt is not a confirmed fix for this case.
