What kind of game is Foamstars?
Foamstars is a Square Enix online 4v4 party shooter for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Metacritic lists February 6, 2024, as its initial release date. Its game details page describes foam as a tool for attacking and for building or changing terrain in the arenas.
At launch, Square Enix producer Kosuke Okatani described the goal as “creating a game that everyone could enjoy.” The January 2024 PlayStation Blog announcement outlined three versus modes—Smash the Star, Happy Bath Survival, and Rubber Duck Party—along with solo Foamstar Mission and cooperative Squad Mission. It also announced seasonal updates planned over one year. That was a launch-era plan, not evidence that updates continued throughout or beyond that period.

Is Foamstars free to download now?
The official US PlayStation Store listing says Foamstars became free to download on October 4, 2024, and lists PS4 and PS5 versions. It also says online features require a PlayStation account. Check the listing for your own region, since the cited page is the US storefront. Its download and account details do not establish current server status or matchmaking activity. The critics’ mixed scores are most useful as a guide to fit, not as a final yes-or-no verdict. Foamstars may appeal to players drawn to team-based matches and the unusual tactical possibilities of using foam to alter an arena. Players who put greater weight on extensive, replayable missions or who are particularly sensitive to monetization concerns may find the criticisms more important.

For a practical decision, read individual reviews with your priorities in mind: look for discussion of the foam mechanics if that is the main draw, and for concrete assessments of mission variety and monetization if those are deal-breakers. The 57 Metascore captures a mixed PS5 critic aggregate, not a prediction that every player will have the same experience.
