FOAMSTARS is worth a try if you want a colorful team shooter built around foam-based movement and arena tactics—but its launch-era reviews found the modes and surrounding content less compelling than that central idea. It launched on PS4 and PS5 on February 6, 2024, became free-to-play on October 4, 2024, and Square Enix ended scheduled seasonal updates after the season that concluded January 17, 2025. What is FOAMSTARS?
FOAMSTARS is an online 4v4 team shooter for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Square Enix released it on February 6, 2024. Its defining idea is that foam is more than a projectile: teams use it in combat and to change how they move through the arena. That creates room for coordination and positioning alongside aiming. Square Enix’s game overview describes its team-based play, and the PlayStation Store listing identifies both PvP and PvE content.
What did reviewers think of FOAMSTARS?
Launch-era reception was mixed. In a snapshot retrieved around August 2026, Metacritic listed the PS5 version at 57/100, labeled “Mixed or Average,” based on 34 critic reviews. The foam mechanic is the main draw
Push Square’s February 9, 2024 review rated the PS5 version 7/10. Reviewer Stephen Tailby praised the mechanic’s tactical potential, writing, “This lends the gameplay a unique tactical edge.” The review’s positive view of the colorful, fast-paced multiplayer captures the game’s strongest case: foam gives matches a distinctive identity and can make team decisions matter beyond simply landing shots. The launch package drew criticism
That same review and other launch-era coverage raised concerns about a slim selection of content, weaker or repetitive co-op missions, cosmetic pricing, and presentation. Taken together, the criticism suggests a gap between a more original PvP premise and a less convincing surrounding package. These judgments describe the game as reviewed around launch in February 2024; they are not a current audit of its store or all content now available.
Is FOAMSTARS free to play?
Square Enix announced that FOAMSTARS would switch to free-to-play on October 4, 2024. The official PlayStation page presents it as free, but availability and store terms may vary by region and can change. Check the listing for your account’s region before downloading. Is FOAMSTARS still being updated, or is it shutting down?
Square Enix said on December 6, 2024 that scheduled seasonal updates would end after the “PARTY GOES ON!” season, which ran from December 13, 2024 to January 17, 2025. The notice said Casual Party and Private Party in Versus, along with Mission mode, would remain available. It announced the end of seasonal updates—not an end-of-service date. The available official statements do not establish current player population, queue times, or regional matchmaking health. If playing online is the deciding factor, check current official service notices and the game’s availability in your regional PlayStation Store rather than assuming that the modes listed in the 2024 notice are currently reachable.

Who should try FOAMSTARS?
- Try it if you enjoy team shooters and are curious about a combat system where arena shaping and movement are part of the tactical loop.
- Be cautious if you want a broad, steadily expanding content roadmap, a strong co-op campaign, or a verified picture of active matchmaking before installing. The final scheduled seasonal update has passed, and current queues are not established by the sources cited here.
