After finishing the story and unlocking Ultimate Vault Hunter Mode (UVHM), focus on Vile Bounties for solo XP; repeatable Drill Sites are a useful alternative when you also want loot or are playing co-op. Level 50 is the requested milestone, not the current cap: a guide updated September 14, 2026 reports that Update 1.10 raised the cap to 70 on September 10, 2026, though that cap change is reported by a secondary source.
Fastest route before finishing the campaign
During the story, prioritize main missions. A September 2026 leveling guide describes the campaign as an efficient natural route to roughly level 40, with nearby side missions as optional additions when they involve little extra travel. That is practical route advice, not a measured guarantee for every character or play style.

- Take side missions in the same area when convenient; skip detours that add substantial backtracking.
- Keep your weapons reasonably current and match elemental damage to enemy defenses to help maintain clear speed. These are recommendations from the guide, not results of an independent weapon test.
- Do not plan around Vile Bounties before completing the story: the reviewed guide says they require UVHM and are unavailable in normal mode.
Best solo XP route after the story: Vile Bounties
- Complete the main story and unlock UVHM.
- Visit bounty boards in unlocked safehouses and look for Vile Bounties, described by the guide as purple contracts with high XP rewards.
- Complete available contracts, then refresh the boards by saving and quitting, or use the guide’s alternate refresh approach where applicable.
- Optimize for quick kills and low travel time. The guide advises breaking Vile enemies’ purple crystals and notes that splash-damage weapons can help; treat this as guide advice rather than a tested build prescription.
- Choose a UVHM rank that lets you clear efficiently. Higher ranks add enemy health and damage, so extra difficulty may work against an XP-focused run if it slows each bounty.
One 2026 guide reports approximately 300,000 XP per hour for an efficient Vile Bounty route. It does not provide a verified, reproducible test protocol, so regard that as the guide’s estimate—not a guaranteed rate or a reliable comparison for your character.
When Drill Sites make more sense
Drill Sites are repeatable wave encounters that end with one or more bosses. The reviewed guides describe resetting them with the nearby Moxxi’s Big Encore machine. They award both XP and loot, making them a reasonable choice when gearing up matters alongside leveling. For solo XP, the reviewed guide rates them below Vile Bounties.

In co-op, guides describe XP as shared and suggest either clearing a Drill Site together or splitting up to run multiple sites in parallel. Which approach is faster depends on the group’s composition and how quickly each player can handle the chosen activity; the available sources do not establish a dependable XP multiplier.
Which leveling route should you choose?
| Route | Best use | Main tradeoff | Access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main campaign with nearby side missions | First character and early progression | Less targeted than repeating an endgame farm | Available during story progression; September 2026 guide |
| Vile Bounties | Solo post-campaign XP focus | Guide describes high XP but comparatively limited loot | Requires UVHM; XP guide |
| Drill Sites | XP alongside loot, including co-op play | Reviewed guide rates XP below Vile Bounties for solo play | Repeatable activity; the guide states no UVHM prerequisite |
What level 50 means now
A HowToPlayHub guide dated September 14, 2026 reports that Update 1.10, released September 10, raised Borderlands 4’s level cap from 60 to 70. That is a secondary-source report, not an official patch-note confirmation here. Treat 50 as a useful target for this route, rather than assuming it remains the game’s maximum level. Older launch-era guides that call 50 the cap are not current on that point.

The guides agree on the broad progression: campaign first, then Vile Bounties for focused solo XP or Drill Sites when loot and co-op flexibility matter. They do not establish a controlled, universal XP-per-hour ranking, so your fastest option will depend on access and actual clear speed.
