The right fix depends on whether you’re playing Bedrock or Java, and whether the world is a Realm, locally hosted game, or dedicated server. Check those details first; a Bedrock permission setting will not fix a protected Java server claim.
First, identify your edition and world host
Check whether you’re playing Minecraft: Java Edition or Bedrock Edition, then determine whether the world is a Realm, a locally hosted multiplayer world, or a dedicated server. Multiplayer access is edition-specific, and settings for a Bedrock Dedicated Server do not apply to every world or Java server. See Minecraft’s multiplayer requirements.
If you do not own or administer the world, you cannot change its permissions yourself. Ask the owner or a moderator to check your player access and the protection on the affected location.
Bedrock: check whether you are a Visitor or Member
Bedrock permission levels determine what a player can do. A Visitor can observe but cannot interact; a Member can build and mine; an Operator can also use commands. Microsoft documents these distinctions in its PlayerPermissionLevel reference.

If you are a Visitor, ask the world owner or server administrator to decide whether to change your permission to Member. Operator access is broader and should only be granted when the administrator intends you to have command privileges.
Bedrock Dedicated Server: check the default for new players
If you administer a Bedrock Dedicated Server, its server.properties setting default-player-permission-level controls the level assigned to new players. Microsoft documents the accepted values as visitor, member, and operator, with member as the default. See the Bedrock Dedicated Server properties reference.

This setting concerns new players. Check the affected player’s assigned level as well: changing the default alone may not change an existing player’s permission.
Java: check whether the location is protected
On a Java multiplayer server, a denial that names another player may point to a protected claim. GriefPrevention’s message configuration includes the wording “You don’t have {0}’s permission to build here,” which indicates that a claim rule is one possible source of similar messages. Review the GriefPrevention message configuration and the SpigotMC GriefPrevention messages file.

Ask the claim owner or a moderator whether you have been trusted in that claim. If the denial affects a broad area or several locations, ask staff to inspect the server’s claim and region protections. Protection plugins can interact; one historical GriefPrevention issue describes claim-creation trouble involving WorldGuard integration on Paper 1.14.4 and GriefPrevention 16.12.0 in 2019. That case is a diagnostic example, not evidence of a current or universal defect.

Commands that change access are administrative tools, not safe workarounds for one blocked block. Minecraft documents /op <player> as granting operator status and /permission as a command for listing or reloading permissions on a dedicated server. See Minecraft’s command guide. Do not grant operator to every player or disable protection just to resolve an unexplained denial; have the owner or administrator check the specific permission or protected area.
