If Five Hearts Under One Roof keeps crashing on Steam Deck, first check whether you have the original game or Five Hearts Under One Roof season2. The clearest report of a crash problem being resolved concerns season2: a player said a November 2025 update changed its runtime, and another player subsequently reported it ran well without manual compatibility changes. That is an individual report, not a guaranteed fix. For the original game, SteamDB lists it as Playable and says it runs successfully on SteamOS.

First, identify which game you installed

The original Five Hearts Under One Roof and Five Hearts Under One Roof season2 are separate editions. The reports about crashes after changing compatibility settings and the later update concern season2; they should not be treated as a fix report for the original.

Check the game’s title in your Steam Library before changing settings. If it is season2, update it before experimenting with compatibility tools. If it is the original, its Steam Deck compatibility record is a different and more favorable piece of evidence.

For season2, update the game before changing Proton

In a Steam Community thread opened on November 18, 2025, a season2 player said compatibility tools were not working and most caused crashes. One reply suggested Proton GE, but the original poster later reported that a November 21 update changed the runtime to Steam Linux 1.0 (scout). On November 22, another player said the game ran well on Deck without changing anything. Read the season2 Steam Community discussion.

#1 Best Overall
Valve Steam Deck OLED 1TB Handheld Gaming Console
  • 1TB NVMe SSD
  • 1280 x 800 HDR OLED display with premium anti-glare etched glass, 7.4" Diagonal display size up to 90Hz refresh rate
  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
  1. Open the game’s Steam Library page and install any available update.
  2. Launch season2 again using its current default compatibility settings.
  3. If it still crashes, note the game version, when the crash occurs, and any compatibility setting you changed before trying another configuration.

The thread supports trying the update first, but it does not establish a universal cause or prove that the update fixes every Deck configuration.

Which Proton should you use?

The available season2 reports do not establish a best Proton version. Proton GE was suggested in the discussion; one player said it restored sound but also reported repeated freezes. That mixed, user-reported result is not enough to recommend Proton GE as a reliable crash fix. If you test a compatibility tool, change one setting at a time so you can tell whether it helped.

What the Steam Deck record says about the original game

SteamDB lists the original Five Hearts Under One Roof (app 3021100) as Playable on Steam Deck. Its compatibility entry says the game runs successfully on SteamOS and that the default graphics configuration performs well on Deck. The compatibility test is timestamped July 19, 2025, so it describes a dated status rather than guaranteeing identical behavior on every future build or device. See the original game’s SteamDB configuration record.

There were older reports of missing gameplay audio on Deck in a discussion opened October 4, 2024. A commenter relayed that support at the time had said the game was not compatible and recommended PC; another user said Proton GE helped audio on Ubuntu but left character dialogue unsynchronized. Those historical audio reports predate the later SteamOS compatibility test and do not identify a current crash cause. Read the original game’s older audio discussion.

If the game still crashes

  • Confirm the exact edition and install its latest available update.
  • Record whether the symptom is a crash, freeze, or missing audio; the reports describe different problems and should not be conflated.
  • If you changed compatibility settings, undo those changes or test them individually rather than assuming one Proton option is a proven fix.
  • For the original game, Steam Support lists Storytaco as developer and publisher and provides the game’s Steam Support page. The listed customer-support email is [email protected].

The original game’s SteamOS + Linux requirements list 4 GB RAM, discrete graphics, broadband internet, and 15 GB free storage. Check the Steam Support listing for the original release, dated October 2, 2024.
