If Fortnite on Windows displays “Couldn’t start the game” with an Easy Anti-Cheat (EAC) error, Epic Games’ specific guidance is to reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat using its Fortnite installation steps. EAC is required to play Fortnite. Epic’s error-specific page addresses the message but does not name code 20006 in the available text, so the code alone does not establish a single cause.
1. Reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat using Epic’s Fortnite instructions
Start with Epic’s remedy for the matching “Couldn’t start the game” Easy Anti-Cheat message: reinstall Easy Anti-Cheat. Use Epic’s instructions rather than downloading replacement files from another site.
- Close the Easy Anti-Cheat launcher if it is open. If you cannot close it, restart your computer.
- Open Epic Games Launcher and start Fortnite. If Windows prompts you to install Easy Anti-Cheat, approve the prompt.
- If no installation prompt appears, follow Epic’s manual installation steps for your Windows version. The instructions use
EasyAntiCheat_EOS_Setup.exewith theinstall prod-fnargument. - Reopen Epic Games Launcher and try starting Fortnite again.
Epic provides separate directions for Windows 10 and Windows 11. For a non-default Fortnite installation, locate the Easy Anti-Cheat folder inside that installation rather than assuming the default folder path. Epic also notes that installing Fortnite on the same drive as Windows may be necessary to avoid registry or user-permission issues.
2. If the reinstall does not help
Epic’s general Easy Anti-Cheat troubleshooting guide lists these additional checks. They are broader EAC troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes for code 20006.

- Check EAC connectivity: Confirm Easy Anti-Cheat can connect as expected.
- Update Windows: Install available operating-system updates.
- Install current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables: Use Microsoft’s current redistributable packages.
- Close potentially interfering background programs: Then try launching Fortnite again.
- Verify Fortnite’s files: Use the game-file verification option in Epic Games Launcher.
3. When to contact Epic Support
If Epic’s reinstall steps and the general checks do not resolve the launch error, contact Epic Support. Include the exact message shown on screen and your Windows version. The available error-specific guidance does not confirm that every instance of code 20006 has the same underlying cause.
