Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFortnite lag on Nintendo Switch can come from Wi-Fi interference, network congestion, ISP routing, or the path to Epic’s servers. There is no single setting that fixes every case. Check for an outage first, run the Switch connection test, then change one network condition at a time and see whether the match improves.
First, identify what “lag” looks like
Delayed responses or sudden ping spikes during a match point toward latency or packet loss. Trouble joining a party or connecting with players can involve NAT restrictions. A game that remains on “Checking for Updates” is a separate startup symptom, with its own Epic guidance below.
Different causes can feel similar, so note when the problem happens and whether other devices on your home network are affected. That context helps distinguish a Fortnite-specific issue from a local Wi-Fi or internet problem.
Check for service or ISP problems
- Check Epic Games’ status page for an issue affecting Fortnite.
- Ask your internet service provider whether there is an outage or degraded service in your area. If other devices also cannot get online, follow Nintendo’s general internet connection troubleshooting, then contact your ISP, router manufacturer, or network administrator if the basic checks do not resolve it.
Epic says congestion, routing, and the matchmaking region selected for a match can affect latency. A sudden increase in ping can reflect an ISP routing problem, even when other internet activity appears normal.

- Introducing Joy-Con, controllers that make new kinds of gaming possible, for use with Nintendo Switch.
- The versatile Joy-Con offer multiple surprising new ways for players to have fun.
- Two Joy-Con can be used independently in each hand, or together as one game controller when attached to the Joy-Con grip.
- They can also attach to the main console for use in handheld mode, or be shared with friends to enjoy two-player action in supported games.
- Each Joy-Con has a full set of buttons and can act as a standalone controller, and each includes an accelerometer and gyro-sensor, making independent left and right motion control possible.
Run the Nintendo Switch connection test
- On the Switch, open System Settings, select Internet, then choose Test Connection.
- Record the connection status, NAT type, download speed, and upload speed.
Nintendo’s latency guidance lists 3 Mbps download and 1 Mbps upload as speed guidance. Meeting those figures does not guarantee low ping: the test does not rule out latency, packet loss, congestion, or a poor route to Fortnite’s servers.
Read the NAT result in context
Nintendo rates NAT types from A to F: A is best for peer-to-peer communication, while F cannot complete peer-to-peer communication. A stricter NAT can interfere with some online activities, including connecting with other players, and both players’ NAT types can affect a connection. It is not a universal explanation for sluggish controls or ping spikes once you are already in a match.

If the main symptom is trouble joining or connecting with players, use Nintendo’s NAT troubleshooting and test again after changing network settings. If you do not administer the router, ask its owner or your ISP to help review the network setup.
Test Wi-Fi before changing settings or buying hardware
- Move closer to the router and reduce obstacles between it and the Switch.
- Pause large downloads, uploads, streams, and other bandwidth-heavy activity on the home network while testing.
- If your router offers different Wi-Fi bands, compare them from the Switch’s location; signal quality and interference vary by home.
- Check that the router firmware is current. If lag continues, ask your ISP about persistent high latency or routing issues.
Make one change at a time, play long enough to compare the same kind of match conditions, and rerun the connection test where useful. This makes it easier to tell whether a change helped rather than guessing from a single match.

Compare with a wired connection if you can
A wired test can help determine whether weak Wi-Fi signal or interference is contributing. Check your dock first: a dock without a built-in LAN port needs a USB LAN adapter for a wired connection. Treat the adapter as optional diagnostic equipment, not a guaranteed lag fix. A wired connection cannot resolve an Epic service issue, ISP routing problem, or every other source of latency.
Check Fortnite’s network information
Where available in the game’s UI, enable network debug information and watch for ping and packet loss. Epic says packet loss indicates a connection problem between the player and the server; its latency guidance says packet loss consistently above about 1% will cause in-game problems. That is Epic’s troubleshooting threshold, not a universal diagnostic test.

Epic notes that Fortnite’s server path uses UDP, while some diagnostic ping tests use ICMP. A generic ping test can therefore miss a problem affecting gameplay. If packet loss or high latency persists, share the Switch test results and what you observed in Fortnite with your ISP.

This is a startup/update-check problem, not the same as ordinary in-match lag. Epic says it can involve miscommunication with its servers. Check Epic’s status page first. If no service issue is listed, follow Epic’s Nintendo-specific “Checking for Updates” troubleshooting, which points to Nintendo’s save-data and manual DNS support guidance. DNS changes in that sequence are for this launch symptom; they are not established as a general fix for multiplayer latency.
