Epic replaced the separate Battle Star currency with XP-based pass progression: earn XP in Fortnite experiences to advance active passes, then claim rewards as they unlock.
When did Fortnite get rid of Battle Stars?
Epic announced the change on October 28, 2024, saying Battle Stars would be retired on December 1, alongside LEGO Pass Studs. Festival Points had already been scheduled for retirement on November 2. The Battle Stars change therefore predates Chapter 6, whose first season began after the announced retirement date. Epic’s announcement laid out the move to XP progression.

How do Battle Passes work without Battle Stars?
Instead of earning Stars to spend on rewards, players earn XP to advance pass tiers. Rewards become available on unlocked pages, and players claim them from those pages. Epic said players can claim available rewards in a non-sequential order or switch on auto-claiming for the next available reward. XP requirements may differ by pass and are shown on the pass reward screen, according to Epic.
This replaced the older Battle Stars system. In Chapter 2 Season 7, Epic described players receiving five Stars each time they leveled up, whether by earning XP or buying a level. Players then spent Stars on rewards in their chosen order; pages opened as they leveled up and claimed rewards, while certain page rewards required claiming the other rewards on that page first. Those were the historical rules, not the current XP-based flow. Epic’s Chapter 2 Season 7 explanation documents that earlier system.

Can any Fortnite mode progress every active pass?
Under Epic’s announced system, XP earned in any Fortnite experience progresses all active passes simultaneously. That means a player does not have to earn progress in a particular mode just because a pass is for Battle Royale, LEGO Fortnite, or Festival. However, passes can have different XP requirements for their tiers, so the same XP total does not necessarily unlock the same number of rewards in every pass. Epic reaffirmed the Battle Pass approach in its February 21, 2025 Chapter 6 Season 2 announcement, which said Battle Pass rewards could be unlocked and claimed by earning XP in any Fortnite experience.
Does shared progression mean one purchase unlocks every pass?
No. Shared XP progression does not combine pass purchases. Epic said players still need to purchase each relevant pass separately to access its premium rewards. It also said buying rewards directly on one pass does not progress another active pass. During Chapter 6 Season 2, Epic listed that Battle Pass at 1,000 V-Bucks; that was the price stated in the February 21, 2025 announcement, not confirmation of a current price.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What changed for Music and LEGO passes?
The progression changes had separate dates and details. Epic said the Music Pass would begin progressing through XP earned in any experience on November 2, 2024, and the LEGO Pass on December 1. It also announced that Music and LEGO passes released after December 1 would use a single track containing free and premium rewards. The then-current passes would keep their dual-track format until later passes. These pass-format changes are distinct from the retirement of Battle Stars.

Epic separately announced on August 7, 2024 that items from future Battle Passes might be offered in the Fortnite Shop at least 18 months after the relevant pass expires. Epic did not guarantee that any particular item would return. This is a separate item-availability policy, not a result of removing Battle Stars. Epic’s item-exclusivity announcement explains the policy.
