Gaming Through the Ages: How Consoles Evolved from Atari to PlayStation 5

From Atari’s cartridge-based VCS to the PS5’s custom CPU, GPU and SSD, console history is a story of expanding game libraries, platform rules and changing media.

Video game consoles evolved from machines with fixed games into platforms built around expandable libraries, developer ecosystems and increasingly capable hardware. The Atari VCS helped establish the cartridge-based model; Nintendo rebuilt confidence in the U.S. market after the 1983 downturn; Sony’s PlayStation brought CD-based games and prominent 3D worlds to a new audience; and the PlayStation 5 represents a platform shaped around custom processors and fast solid-state storage.

Before cartridges, the console and its games were one package

Early home consoles generally bundled one or more games into the machine, with no way for players to install additional titles. The turning point came in the late 1970s, as microprocessors and removable media made it possible to separate a console from the games it played. The Library of Congress-hosted chapter “Chapter 5: Video Game Console Timeline” identifies the Atari VCS as an inflection point in that shift.

Cartridges changed more than the way games were delivered. A console could now support a growing library, while publishers and outside developers could create software for a platform they did not own. That model made the console maker’s relationships with game creators—and its rules for approving and distributing games—central to the business.

Atari’s rise and the 1983 downturn

The cartridge era created new opportunities, but it also made the market vulnerable to a surge of competing software and products. The Library of Congress-hosted chapter reports Atari sales fell from 5.1 million units in 1982 to 3 million in 1983, and that the company lost $356 million in 1983. These are figures reported in the chapter, published in 2006, rather than a harmonized set of industry-wide sales data.

Atari 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition Console, Game & Wireless Joystick
  • Atari 2600+ PAC-MAN Edition: The iconic console, now in PAC-MAN yellow with illuminated character icons across the front.
  • Backward and Forward Compatible: Play retro games just like you remember them on a system upgraded for today. Play both Atari 2600 and 7800 games on this 2600+ console. Compatible with everything in the Plus Platform, as well as with most original accessories and cartridges.
  • New Arcade-Style PAC-MAN Game: Includes PAC-MAN: Double Feature 2-in-1 game cartridge. Featuring an all-new, arcade-style version, PAC-MAN 7800 and the very first home version of the game, PAC-MAN 2600.
  • Wireless Joystick: Also includes a PAC-MAN Edition of the Atari CX-40+ Wireless Joystick.
  • HDMI Output: Connect instantly to modern TVs with HDMI output and widescreen mode.

The causes of the 1983 downturn are not reducible to a single explanation. It is too simple to say that “bad games” alone caused it: the chapter notes that explanations vary. The episode nevertheless exposed a lasting platform challenge. A large software library can attract players, but the platform’s long-term health also depends on whether consumers can trust the games and the system behind them.

Nintendo rebuilds a U.S. console market

Nintendo’s later position illustrates how platform rules could shape a market as well as software did. The same historical chapter reports that Nintendo reached 90 percent of the U.S. video game console market in 1987. That is a U.S.-specific figure for that year, not a global share or a present-day measure.

The chapter also describes changes to Nintendo’s licensing and pricing practices following Federal Trade Commission scrutiny. The broader lesson is that a console ecosystem is not just a box and its games: licensing policies help determine which developers can publish, while commercial rules can attract regulatory attention.

PlayStation moves consoles toward CDs and 3D presentation

Sony launched the first PlayStation in Japan in December 1994, followed by North American and European launches in September 1995, according to the Sony Interactive Entertainment timeline. The U.S. launch price was $299, and the system used CD media, according to the Library of Congress-hosted chapter. CDs became an alternative to cartridges for delivering games, while Sony’s own history describes a shift from traditional 2D experiences toward more complex real-time 3D worlds. This was a change in format and presentation, not an achievement attributable to Sony alone.

The console also made a small piece of its identity audible. On its PlayStation history page, Sony quotes original start-up music composer Takafumi Fujisawa: “I expressed the excitement to the game that begins after this sound by starting the music quietly in order not to scare the user when they turn the power on and follow it with the sound quality that sounds original and also welcoming.” It is a specific account of the start-up sound’s intended feel, rather than evidence of how every player received it.

PlayStation 2 scales up the platform

Sony’s timeline records the PlayStation 2 launching in Japan in March 2000 and North America in October 2000. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s sales table reports more than 160 million PS2 hardware units sold as of March 31, 2012. That dated figure gives a sense of the platform’s scale, but it should not be confused with a current, directly comparable tally for every earlier console: historical sales totals use differing methods.

PlayStation 5: a platform built around custom hardware and an SSD

Sony places the PlayStation 5 in the 2020 generation and describes its hardware as including a custom CPU, GPU and SSD on its PS5 history page. The emphasis on solid-state storage marks a different hardware basis from the removable cartridges of the Atari VCS era and the CDs used by the original PlayStation.

Sony Interactive Entertainment reports more than 95 million PS5 hardware units sold worldwide as of June 30, 2026, in its Business Data & Sales table. Sony labels these cumulative figures as sell-in, not retail sell-through; the table also says they include returned and refurbished products. They therefore describe units sold into the market under Sony’s reporting definition, not the number of active players or confirmed consumer purchases.

What changed from Atari to PS5—and what the numbers cannot show

The arc from Atari to PlayStation 5 is not a simple story of each generation making games “better.” It is a history of changing relationships between hardware, software and the companies that manage platforms.

  • Games moved from fixed to expandable. Early systems offered built-in games; removable media let players add titles and gave consoles the basis for a software library.
  • Distribution formats changed. Cartridges helped define the Atari VCS-era model, CDs featured in the original PlayStation, and the PS5’s identity includes an SSD. These are different ways of delivering and supporting games, not a complete account of every format used across the industry.
  • Platform governance mattered. Atari’s market downturn, Nintendo’s licensing and pricing practices, and regulatory scrutiny all show that an ecosystem depends on more than hardware specifications.
  • Hardware evolved alongside the platform. Sony describes the original PlayStation’s move toward complex real-time 3D presentation, while its PS5 materials point to a custom CPU, GPU and SSD. Those examples illustrate changes in capability without implying that one company invented 3D gaming.

Sales figures offer snapshots, not a like-for-like league table. Sony’s PlayStation figures are dated and, for PS5, explicitly defined as sell-in; the historical sources for Atari and Nintendo report different kinds of market measures. The available figures should therefore be read with their dates, geography and definitions attached, rather than combined into a single ranking of console generations.
