Mudstack announced a $4 million financing round on August 19, 2024, and named games-industry veteran James Gwertzman its CEO. The company said it was building asset-management, file-versioning, and collaboration software for game studios, with the new funding intended to support product development, hiring, and customer expansion.

What Mudstack does

Mudstack described its product as file-versioning and asset-management software for game teams, with collaboration tools for artists, developers, and producers. GeekWire characterized it as cloud storage for game-asset management. The company’s stated goal was to help teams coordinate production work and keep assets from being lost; claims that the platform could shorten development time or encourage creativity were company positioning, not independently measured results.

That description sets the scope of the 2024 announcement, not a current product specification. The sources reporting the round do not establish Mudstack’s present availability, feature set, or pricing.

Who invested, and how Mudstack said it would use the money

Mudstack said Anthos Capital led the $4 million round. Khosla Ventures, A16Z GAMES, Pioneer Square Labs, and Hyperplane also participated, according to the company’s August 19, 2024 announcement. The release did not disclose each investor’s allocation, the company’s valuation, or the financing instrument.

The company said it planned to use the proceeds for further platform development, team growth, and customer expansion. That statement describes its plans at the time; it does not establish how the money was ultimately spent.

James Gwertzman’s appointment

The announcement named James Gwertzman CEO and said co-founder Jordan Stevens, previously CEO, would become Head of Product. GamesBeat reported that Gwertzman said he joined as CEO in May 2024.

Gwertzman had co-founded and led PlayFab. Andreessen Horowitz’s 2021 announcement also described him as a repeat games founder, executive, and investor, and identified him as a PlayFab founder.

In Mudstack’s August 19, 2024 press release, Gwertzman framed the opportunity as a production-tools problem: “It’s crazy to me that our industry is so mature, yet basic tools for managing content and production pipelines are still lacking.” He also said he had wanted to build an “operating system for game studios” for a long time. Those statements express his view and ambition, not an independent assessment of Mudstack’s software.

Customers named in the announcement

Mudstack said it had signed its first two large enterprise customers: Metacore and Paradox Studios. The company release also quoted Petter Lundh, identified as Managing Art Director at Paradox Studios, praising the time saved on asset management and the software’s ease of use for artists. This is a customer endorsement published by Mudstack, not an independently tested performance result. The 2024 announcement does not establish whether either studio remains a customer today.

What the announcement does—and does not—establish

GeekWire reported that Mudstack was founded in 2019 by Jordan Stevens and had five people working remotely at the time of its 2024 coverage. These are contemporaneous details, not a current headcount or operating-status update. The funding announcement documents a financing and leadership change, but does not verify whether the business is operating now, whether its product can currently be accessed, or what it costs.
