The researchers estimated that any average effect was probably too small to be noticeable. That is not proof that games have no effect on anyone: the study covered a limited set of games and players, and later research using a different method found benefits in a Japanese sample.
What the 2022 study found
The peer-reviewed paper, Time spent playing video games is unlikely to impact well-being, examined gameplay duration and players’ self-reported well-being. The study team linked six weeks of objective play records from 38,935 adult players across games supplied by seven publishers with three waves of well-being surveys. Its conclusion was that the data provided little to no evidence of a causal connection between time spent playing and well-being in this sample.
The authors said the average effects were probably too small to be subjectively noticeable. “Unlikely to impact” does not mean that the effect was proven to be exactly zero, nor does it establish that gaming is universally beneficial or harmless. The paper also noted that players’ motivations may matter: duration alone does not describe why someone plays or how they experience a particular game.
What the study can—and cannot—tell you
Strength: recorded playtime
Rather than relying only on players’ estimates of how long they played, the researchers used objective gameplay records. They paired those records with repeated self-reports of well-being, so the two measures did not come from the same kind of data.

Limits: adults and a narrow slice of gaming
Participants were at least 18 years old, so the findings should not be treated as direct evidence about children or teenagers. The study covered games from seven publishers, not every platform, genre, player, or gaming situation. Its authors said the work captured only a small part of gaming overall and called for data covering more games and players.
The study was not a treatment trial and did not establish a clinical diagnosis or offer individual mental-health advice. It addresses average patterns in its sample; it cannot determine what gaming means for a particular person.

How a 2024 study differs
A 2024 study using console lotteries and Japanese survey data reached a more positive conclusion in its setting. It included 97,602 people aged 10–69 surveyed between 2020 and 2022, and reported that console ownership and increased play improved well-being. The contrast does not simply overturn the 2022 result: the studies differed in age range, geography, period, exposure, and method.
The Japan study also reported subgroup differences and estimated that benefits diminished above three hours in subgroup analysis. That finding is not a universal gaming limit or a general recommendation; it belongs to the study’s particular sample and analysis.

What to take away about gaming and mental health
- Time spent gaming by itself is not shown by the 2022 study to cause a meaningful change in well-being for the adult players it measured.
- The result is specific to that sample and set of games, not a verdict on every player, age group, or game.
- Motivation and context may matter, and a separate 2024 study reported benefits using a different design and population.
- Neither study, as described here, supplies a personal diagnosis or a one-size-fits-all rule for how long someone should play.
Related evidence and its status
In a June 2023 announcement, Oxford’s Internet Institute described an opt-in PowerWash Simulator dataset collected over 222 days, involving more than 11,000 players in 39 countries. The announcement said a full analysis had not yet been published and peer reviewed at that time; that statement describes the status reported in June 2023, not necessarily its status today.
