Gaming may be a problem when it is getting in the way of sleep, relationships, school, work, or other things you care about. Hours played alone do not establish an addiction or diagnosis. What matters is whether you can control your gaming, whether it has displaced other parts of life, and whether you continue or play more despite harm.
What people mean by “gaming addiction”
“Gaming addiction” is a familiar phrase, but the World Health Organization (WHO) uses gaming disorder in the ICD-11. It describes a pattern of digital or video gaming—online or offline—involving impaired control, gaming taking increasing priority over other interests and daily activities, and continuing or escalating despite negative consequences. The pattern must be severe enough to cause significant impairment in an important area of life, such as personal, family, social, educational, or work functioning. It would normally have been evident for at least 12 months. WHO explains the definition and diagnostic context.
This is not a diagnosis you can determine from hours played, a checklist, or an online quiz. The WHO says gaming disorder affects only a small proportion of people who game. Its topic page reports estimates of problem gaming ranging from 1.3% to 9.9% across populations; this is a proxy range, not a global estimate of diagnosed gaming disorder, and WHO says estimates vary considerably because standardized assessment instruments are lacking. When gaming is affecting your life
You do not need to decide whether you meet a diagnostic definition before taking a concern seriously. Focus on what has changed and what you want to be different. Consider the following questions as prompts for reflection, not a diagnostic test:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

- Is gaming interfering with sleep, meals, movement, school, work, or responsibilities at home?
- Have relationships or activities you value been pushed aside?
- Have you tried to cut back and found it difficult to follow through?
- Do you keep gaming, or game more, despite consequences you recognize?
- Are mood or other health concerns affecting your gaming, or being affected alongside it?
WHO notes that health concerns associated with gaming behavior can include sleep deprivation, insufficient physical activity, unhealthy diet, eyesight or hearing problems, musculoskeletal problems, aggressive behavior, and depression. These are possible concerns, not inevitable outcomes of gaming and not, by themselves, proof of gaming disorder. WHO’s ICD-11 announcement discusses health concerns associated with gaming behavior.
WHO and APA use different diagnostic frameworks
WHO includes gaming disorder in the ICD-11. The American Psychiatric Association (APA), by contrast, describes Internet Gaming Disorder in DSM-5-TR as a condition for further study. Its patient information lists proposed symptoms such as preoccupation, withdrawal-like feelings when gaming is unavailable, tolerance, unsuccessful attempts to cut down, giving up activities, continuing despite problems, deception about play time, gaming to relieve negative mood, and jeopardizing relationships or work. The APA describes five or more proposed symptoms within a year as the threshold for this proposed condition. That list is not a self-diagnostic shortcut or a replacement for a clinician’s judgment. Read the APA’s patient information on Internet Gaming.

How to start changing your gaming habits
There is no single proven timetable or method that everyone must follow, and the sources cited here do not establish that everyone needs to stop gaming completely. A useful first step is to connect the concern to specific effects and goals, rather than setting an arbitrary target for hours.
- Write down what is being affected. Note concrete changes in sleep, responsibilities, relationships, mood, health, and activities you value. Be specific about what you want to regain or protect.
- Choose a meaningful goal. For example, you might want to meet a particular responsibility, restore time for an activity, or protect sleep. The goal should reflect what matters to you, not just a number of hours.
- Notice the situations around play. Consider when gaming is hardest to control and what you are feeling or avoiding at those times. This can help you explain the pattern clearly if you seek support.
- Ask for help if the problem is serious or persists. Discuss the effects with a doctor or qualified mental-health professional, especially when gaming is substantially disrupting daily life or you cannot make changes you want to make. The APA advises contacting a health-care provider or mental-health professional if you are concerned about gaming preoccupation and related problems.
These are practical reflection steps, not a validated self-treatment plan. Deleting every game, installing a blocker, or following a fixed abstinence schedule is not established here as a universal cure.

What professional support can involve
Assessment and treatment depend on the provider and location. A qualified professional can help consider whether gaming disorder fits, identify related concerns, and discuss options suited to your circumstances. When looking for help, it is reasonable to ask whether the provider offers individual or group support, whether family involvement is possible, what age and referral rules apply, and whether they can address other mental-health needs.
One service-specific example is the National Centre for Gaming Disorders at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust. The service describes CBT-based individual or group psychological interventions and a preparation-for-change phase. Its CBT intervention consists of eight sessions focused on personal goals and values, thoughts, feelings, behavior, unhelpful thinking styles, difficult emotions, and behavior change. For parents or carers of young people aged 16 or under, it describes four psychoeducational workshops, family therapy, and a monthly online parent peer-support group for parents who have completed the workshop. These are details of that NHS service, not a universal treatment protocol; eligibility and capacity may change. Its stated focus is to help people gain more control so gaming does not take over other areas of life. The centre says it does not provide crisis interventions. Do I have gaming addiction if I play for many hours?
Not necessarily. Hours alone do not establish gaming disorder. The defining concerns are impaired control, gaming taking priority over other activities, continuing despite negative consequences, and significant impairment in an important area of life.
