The new Elden Ring release is ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition, a Nintendo Switch 2 edition of the existing action RPG—not a newly announced mainline sequel. Bandai Namco says it became available on August 28, 2026, with the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree, and additional customization. Owners of the game on other listed platforms can get the new content separately as the Tarnished Pack.
What is the new Elden Ring game?
ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition brings the original game to Nintendo hardware for the first time, according to Bandai Namco’s August 28, 2026 announcement. The official sources reviewed for this release describe a platform edition and content update; they do not announce a new mainline Elden Ring sequel.
FromSoftware and Bandai Namco announced the original ELDEN RING in 2019 as a co-developed action RPG. Their announcement said FromSoftware would publish in Japan and Bandai Namco would handle overseas territories. The original announcement provides that context, but the Tarnished Edition is a new edition of that game, not a separately announced follow-up.
What does Tarnished Edition include?
The Switch 2 edition bundles the base game with the Shadow of the Erdtree expansion. It also adds two starting classes, four armor sets, and three appearance options for Torrent, the player’s mount. The new content can also be purchased for the existing game on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam as the Tarnished Pack. Bandai Namco’s announcement names those platforms; it does not list PS4 or Xbox One for the Tarnished Pack.

The official product page says Shadow of the Erdtree requires the base game. Check the store listing for your platform before buying, especially if you are comparing editions or already own part of the game.
How is this different from Elden Ring Nightreign?
ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN is a separate spinoff, released May 30, 2025. FromSoftware and Bandai Namco describe it as a co-op action survival game with session-based play. It supports three-player play and also has a single-player mode, and its listed platforms are PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Steam. The joint release distinguishes it from the original game and its editions.

What sales figures have the publishers reported?
Bandai Namco’s 2026 Tarnished Edition announcement says the original ELDEN RING has sold more than 30 million units and has received more than 400 Game of the Year nominations. The announcement does not state an as-of date for the sales figure, so it should not be treated as a dated shipment count. Bandai Namco’s announcement gives those figures.
A separate joint FromSoftware and Bandai Namco release reports more than 30 million copies of ELDEN RING shipped as of March 2025. The same July 2025 release reports more than 10 million copies of Shadow of the Erdtree shipped and more than 5 million copies of NIGHTREIGN shipped as of July 2025; it says the shipment figures include digital versions and Steam downloads. The joint release uses “shipped,” which is not interchangeable with the 2026 announcement’s “sold.”
