Yes: Ghost of Yōtei is the follow-up to 2020’s Ghost of Tsushima as the next game in the franchise, but it is not a direct story sequel. It takes place centuries later, follows a new hero named Atsu, and does not bring back Jin Sakai. The game launched exclusively for PS5 on October 2, 2025.
How Ghost of Yōtei follows Ghost of Tsushima
Sucker Punch describes Ghost of Yōtei as a new story rather than a continuation of Jin Sakai’s. The games are linked through their franchise, design and mythos, not by a direct narrative handoff. Jin does not appear in Ghost of Yōtei. The developer answers the sequel question directly in its official FAQ.

That makes the game a standalone chapter: newcomers can follow Atsu’s story without first playing Ghost of Tsushima, while returning players will recognize the broader series identity.
Who is Atsu, and where and when is the game set?
Atsu is the protagonist of a story set in 1603, more than 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. She travels through the lands around Mount Yōtei in Ezo, which Sucker Punch identifies as present-day Hokkaido. The reveal describes the region as outside Japan’s rule at the time, with landscapes including grasslands and snowy tundra. These setting details come from the game’s announcement.

Sony’s launch announcement characterizes Atsu as a wandering mercenary pursuing vengeance and redemption in rural Japan of the 1600s. Sucker Punch co-founder and studio head Brian Fleming described it as “a story of healing and redemption that runs deeper than vengeance, told through the eyes of a new hero set in the breathtaking edge of Japan.”
What kind of game is it?
Sony describes Ghost of Yōtei as combining expansive exploration with intricate combat. Features announced by PlayStation include choosing leads against the Yōtei Six, pursuing bounties and other targets, learning skills from weapon sensei, acquiring new weapons and making campfires while exploring. The game also includes a way to glimpse Atsu’s past. These are announced features, not a substitute for a hands-on assessment.

Platform, release date and editions
Ghost of Yōtei launched worldwide on PS5 on October 2, 2025. Sony’s FAQ says it supports PS5 Pro; the launch release identifies PS5 as its exclusive platform. The PlayStation UK product page lists a Standard Edition on Blu-ray disc. Edition availability and current pricing can vary by region and retailer.

The prices above are US launch MSRPs reported in Sony’s April 2025 edition announcement and October 2025 launch release, not current prices. PlayStation specified that the Collector’s Edition mask replica measures 6.8 × 5 × 5.9 inches and the sash is 71 inches long.

Limited-edition hardware and collectibles
Sony also announced limited-edition Gold and Black DualSense controllers, a PS5 console bundle with a disc drive and matching controller, and Gold Edition console covers for PS5 slim and PS5 Pro. The Black console bundle was exclusive to direct.playstation.com; availability differed by region. Sony’s hardware announcement gives the product details. Is it worth playing Ghost of Tsushima first?
Not to understand the main story: Ghost of Yōtei has a different protagonist and is set centuries later, so it is designed to stand on its own. Playing Ghost of Tsushima first is optional if you want the context of the franchise’s earlier chapter and its shared design and mythos.
