How to find masks efficiently
Masks are generally cosmetic, but GameSpot identifies Kanemori’s Two-Faced Mask as an exception with a damage tradeoff effect. Do not assume every mask is purely visual.
To locate activity collectibles, Shamisen Songs and upgraded Robes for Sitturaynu can help find several activity types. Golden birds point toward nearby collectibles, which become marked on the map as you approach them, according to PowerPyx.

#1 Best Overall
- Stunning graphics and gameplay, explore the wild and striking lands around Mount Yotei on foot or horseback. Travel picturesque parts of northern Japan through grasslands, snowy ridges, fields of wildflowers, and more.
- Discover renegade combat, engage in lawless katana combat and battles with adversaires. Train with various sensei as you find and learn to use each new weapon.
- An unconventional story and journey, take in the cultural beauty of Japan, bathe in an onsen, visit shrines to pray, try Sumi-e painting, and so much more.
- Choose your weapon, battle Atsu's opponents as you see fit, with levelled-up dual katanas, odachi, kusarigama and other new weapons.
Some listed rewards require more than obtaining an armor set: upgrade it to the specified level to unlock its mask variants. Vendor stock may also depend on campaign progress, so revisit merchants as the story advances.

- Beast of Flame, Iron Mantle, Horned Stubbornness, Cicada’s Slumber, and Koromodako’s: buy these from Ainu Merchants with flowers. Ainu NPCs appear at regional inns after you meet a caravan and progress the campaign; check their stock again later.

Bounties, quests, and activities
- Toshi the Torch Mask, Blue Yamauba Mask, and Eijiro the Ruthless’ Mask: defeat the matching bounty targets in Ishikari Plain.

Nayoro Wilds
- Mask of Community: complete the Peaceful Kotan Sumi-e Painting on a high rock formation overlooking Husko Kotan.
- Tengai Hat: climb and grapple to the highest rock formations directly west of Husko Kotan. Although it looks like a hat, the game categorizes it as a mask.
- Kanemori’s Two-Faced Mask: complete “The Face of a Master” and “The Face of a Demon,” then camp in another zone and look for a mysterious merchant. GameSpot reports that the merchant may appear randomly and sold the mask for 1,000 mon.

- Mask of Slumber: complete the Frozen Moment Sumi-e Painting across from the Black Dye Vendor at Teshio River.

- War Cry Mask: open all 12 Nine Tails Puzzle Boxes; the final box rewards the mask.
Vendors, quests, and armor upgrades
- Smoke Kitsune, Onryo’s Prayer, and Curious Shade: buy these from Teshio’s Black Dye Vendor after some regional story progression.
- Yuki Mushi Mask: complete the Crimson Kimono quest, obtain its armor, and upgrade the set to level 2. At level 4, the set unlocks the Crimson Kimono Mask.

- The Kitsune’s Mask: defeat the Kitsune and complete “The Kitsune’s Fate.”
GameSpot’s guide also describes a mask collected from a building roof in Sanctuary Grove as Yotei’s Winter Mask, but the available location and sequence details are incomplete, so its exact pickup instructions cannot be established here.
Rank #2
- Discover a bold, new story of a warrior in Japan who is on her own mission of vengeance.
- Set 300 years after the critically acclaimed Ghost of Tsushima, Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan. The story follows a haunted, lone mercenary named Atsu. Thirsty for revenge, she travels through the beautiful, rugged landscapes of northern Japan, hunting those who killed her family many years earlier.
- Sixteen years after her family’s death, Atsu’s quest across Ezo brings her to unexplored lands in search of a gang of six outlaws, but she finds much more than vengeance. Throughout her journey, Atsu will discover unlikely allies, and greater bonds than she could have imagined.
Oshima Coast and late-game masks
Oshima Coast rewards
- Mask of Remembrance: complete the Lost Flight Sumi-e Painting in northwestern Oshima Coast near the region entrance.
- Onryo’s Drowning Mask: buy it from the Blue Dye Vendor in western Oshima Coast. GameSpot encountered this vendor after several main quests and could not confirm whether the mask becomes available earlier than Onryo’s Fury.
- Ginji’s Guard Mask: complete “Pride Before Tea,” which starts by speaking with the armorsmith at Benten Port.
- Onryo Mask: worn automatically near the end of “To Catch a Spider.”
Chapter 3 and campaign completion
- Ashen Blood Mask: after Oshima Coast main quests lead back to Yōtei Grasslands and Chapter 3 begins, claim it from an Onryo Gift Altar in a settlement.
- Onryo’s Fury Mask: defeat the Spider in “Call of the Hunt” during Chapter 3, then visit the Old Inn gift altar in Yōtei Grasslands.
- Onryo’s Ember, Onryo’s Smoke, Rancorous Wrath, and Weaver’s Fear: late-game Ainu Merchant wares reported by GameSpot. Its guide found them in Chapter 3 before the finale; earlier availability was not confirmed.
- The Dragon’s Mask and The Spider’s Mask: after beating the campaign, visit any Onryo Gift Altar.
Activity-completion masks
- Wolf Pack Mask: complete every Wolf Den.
- Golden Mask: complete all Shrine climbing challenges.
- Inari’s Cunning Mask: complete fox-den tasks across the regions, then speak with the caretaker at Sanctuary Grove. A separate PowerPyx fox-den guide lists 11 dens and says to visit Sanctuary Grove afterward, but calls the reward a golden fox mask rather than Inari’s Cunning Mask. Check the in-game inventory for the exact reward name.
The 11 dens listed by that guide are: Lake View, Flowing Water, and Grassy Hill in Yōtei Grasslands; Fire and Twin Path in Ishikari Plain; Warm Plains and Whispering in Tokachi Range; Clear Water in Nayoro Wilds; Winding River and High Wall in Teshio Ridge; and Blushing Forest in Oshima Coast.
