Ghost of Yōtei stars Atsu, a new protagonist on a quest in 1603 Ezo, and introduces the Yōtei Six, allies, new weapons, and player-directed exploration. The April 23, 2025 reveal outlined those features; PlayStation’s current combat page and later launch and Complete Edition announcements show how the game’s features and post-launch content developed.
Who is Atsu, and where does Ghost of Yōtei take place?
Atsu is a new protagonist, not a continuation of Jin Sakai’s story. Sucker Punch announced her and the setting on September 24, 2024: the game takes place in 1603 in the lands around Mount Yōtei, in Ezo—present-day Hokkaido. The announcement described the region as outside Japan’s rule at the time, with grasslands, snowy tundra, and danger. It is a standalone story set more than 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima. PlayStation’s setting announcement quotes Sucker Punch Senior Communications Manager Andrew Goldfarb: “Our new setting also gives us the opportunity to introduce new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and even new weapons.”

Which characters and story features were revealed?
The Yōtei Six
On April 23, 2025, PlayStation introduced the Yōtei Six, the group of antagonists Atsu is pursuing. The reveal emphasized that players can choose which member to hunt first rather than following one fixed target order. Sony’s reveal also showed Atsu’s allies and described a mechanic that lets players glimpse her past, connecting her present journey with earlier events in her life.
Allies and the wolf companion
The reveal showed allies who join Atsu’s story. PlayStation’s current combat and exploration overview specifically says Atsu can call on her wolf companion in a fight. That gives the companion a direct combat role, beyond being a character in the story.

What weapons and combat abilities does Atsu use?
The April reveal showed several of Atsu’s weapons. PlayStation’s current combat page adds more detail about the released game’s combat options:
- Tanegashima matchlock: A firearm with two ammunition types.
- Quickfire tools: Kunai and smoke bombs give Atsu options for fast attacks and disruption.
- Weapon-specific techniques: Atsu can learn techniques tied to her weapons, with weapon sensei among the people players can seek out.
- Enemy weapons: Atsu can disarm enemies and use their weapons against them.
- Mounted attacks: She can tackle enemies from horseback.
- Wolf support: Atsu can call on her wolf companion during combat.
The reveal’s mention of weapon sensei ties combat progression to exploration: seeking them out is one of the player’s choices, alongside pursuing the Yōtei Six and taking bounties.

How does exploration work?
The April 2025 announcement described a less rigid pursuit structure. Players can decide which of the Yōtei Six to track first, take bounties on other targets, or seek weapon sensei. Atsu can also make campfires anywhere in the open world. PlayStation’s current feature page describes additional activities and tools:
- Places to visit: Camps, travelers, shrines, and hot springs.
- Creative activity: Sumi-e painting.
- Traversal and observation: A grappling hook and spyglass.
- Combat preparation: Open-world camps and campfires offer a way to pause during exploration.
What was revealed later, and what was not part of the original reveal?
Launch and PS5 features
Ghost of Yōtei launched worldwide on PS5 on October 2, 2025. Sony’s launch announcement described it as a standalone experience set in 1600s rural Japan and listed Standard, Digital Deluxe, and Collector’s Editions. It also covered PS5 Pro visual features, DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive triggers, and PlayStation Portal support. These are launch details, not part of the April character-and-feature reveal.

Complete Edition and later content
Sony’s August 12, 2026 Complete Edition announcement added post-launch context: the Echoes of Sekigahara story expansion, the Most Wanted single-player combat survival mode, and Ghost of Yōtei Legends co-op. The announcement was updated August 14 to clarify that new Watanabe Mode tracks would arrive in the October 1 patch, including for players who did not buy the Complete Edition upgrade. None of this later content was part of the original April 2025 reveal.

The April 2025 presentation established the core shape of Atsu’s adventure: a new lead character, the Yōtei Six and other allies, a glimpse-into-the-past story mechanic, varied weapons, and freedom to choose how to pursue targets and develop combat skills. The official combat page gives the clearest current picture of how those ideas appear in the game, while Sony’s later announcements place the PS5 launch and additional post-launch modes in their proper timeline.
