Grimmwood was a PC cooperative survival MMO from Big Moustache Games, published by Headup Games, with an initial release date of August 2, 2018, according to Metacritic. Steam described it as a blend of survival, strategy and exploration, set in a mystical forest where players worked together to defend a village from monsters attacking around midnight. Its design could involve up to 40 other players.
Can you play Grimmwood now?
Headup and Big Moustache Games announced on Steam on July 23, 2019 that Grimmwood could no longer be bought on Steam or any other store and that its game servers would be deactivated. That announcement is the key qualification for anyone reading the old reviews: the game’s central premise depends on cooperating with other players, so a server shutdown undermines the experience those critics assessed. The announcement documents the plan at that time; it does not independently confirm the technical server status in 2026, and the available evidence does not establish whether unofficial hosting or a workaround exists.
What did critics think of Grimmwood?
Metacritic lists a 73 Metascore, categorized as “Mixed or Average,” based on five critic reviews. This is a small historical sample, not a broad or recent consensus, and it says nothing by itself about whether the game remains playable.

Teamwork and genre mix
The Overpowered Noobs review praised the combination of cooperative survival, exploration, strategy and time management, particularly the way those systems encouraged teamwork. That social coordination was central to the game’s appeal: players were not simply progressing through a solo campaign, but helping a village prepare for its nightly danger.
Pacing and regular check-ins
The Digital Fix observed that the game could feel slow for players looking for rapid progress in a single sitting. Its limited actions and measured pace could instead appeal to players who enjoy checking in regularly. Popzara reviewer Nia Bothwell described a map of more than 600 randomly generated tiles and reported logging in consistently for a week to check on fellow villagers; that is the reviewer’s account of their play experience, not a universal measure of how long the game takes.

Dependence on a community
Areajugones stressed that a social game needs a community to sustain its concept. That criticism points to a structural trade-off rather than a minor feature: the same reliance on other players that made village cooperation distinctive also made the experience vulnerable when the community or supporting services disappeared.
