CD PROJEKT RED has confirmed that Ciri is the protagonist of The Witcher IV, but its official materials do not confirm that Geralt appears in the game or is playable. The developer calls it the start of a new Witcher saga—not an origin story. The planned release window is 2028.
What CD PROJEKT RED has confirmed
- Ciri is the protagonist. In its December 13, 2024 announcement, CD PROJEKT RED described the game as the first entry in a new Witcher saga and said Ciri steps into the protagonist role. The official game page also presents her setting out on a journey through a dark fantasy world.
- The game begins a new saga. Game Director Sebastian Kalemba said, “We’re kicking off a brand-new Witcher saga, this time with Ciri as the heart of the story!”
- The planned release window is 2028. CD PROJEKT RED stated that window in a September 2, 2026 company update. It is not an exact launch date.
- Geralt’s role in The Witcher IV is not established by those sources. The update says he will return in the separate The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past expansion, then says Ciri takes over as the main protagonist in The Witcher IV. That describes a handoff between releases, but does not say Geralt appears in IV or can be played there.
Why the game is not confirmed as an origin story
CD PROJEKT RED frames The Witcher IV as the start of a new saga, with Ciri at its center. Kalemba has said the team wants to explore “what it means to truly become a witcher” by following her on her Path. That supports a story about Ciri’s journey, but the official materials cited here do not call the game an “origin story.”
What the reveal trailer shows—and what it does not
The December 2024 reveal trailer follows Ciri as she takes a witcher contract in a remote village threatened by a monster demanding human sacrifices. It depicts her using a chain and advanced magic, but CD PROJEKT RED describes the trailer as a short, self-contained story. It is not gameplay footage: the nearly six-minute trailer was pre-rendered in a custom build of Unreal Engine 5. The game itself is being developed with customized Unreal Engine 5 technology.
How Geralt and Ciri fit into the release handoff
Geralt remains the established lead of earlier Witcher stories, and the announced Songs of the Past expansion gives him a separate return. CD PROJEKT RED’s September 2026 update describes that return as happening “before Ciri takes over as the main protagonist in The Witcher 4.” The wording confirms the protagonist transition; it does not answer whether Geralt has a supporting role in the new game.

A Games.ch interview listing records questions about Ciri taking Geralt’s place and whether Geralt would be playable, but the accessible listing does not include the answer. It therefore cannot verify either an appearance or playability in The Witcher IV.

CD PROJEKT RED’s official The Witcher IV page recommends The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Complete Edition for readers who want to explore the story before the new game and play as Geralt. That recommendation is a way into the earlier story, not evidence that The Witcher IV is available or that Geralt appears in it.
