Generation Zero Review: Is It Worth Playing in 2026?

Generation Zero is a stealth-minded open-world shooter set in machine-overrun 1980s Sweden. Here’s how its combat, co-op, platforms, and ended development shape the buying decision.

Generation Zero is worth considering if you want a slow-burn open-world shooter built around scouting, scavenging, and taking apart machines through careful encounters—not nonstop firefights. You can play alone or in co-op for up to four players. The key buying caveat is support: the developer announced on January 29, 2025, that active development had ended, while saying the game would remain available and multiplayer would continue to work as it did then.

What kind of game is Generation Zero?

Generation Zero is an open-world action shooter set in a fictionalized 1980s Sweden, in a region called Östertörn. Its human population has disappeared, leaving hostile machines to patrol the countryside. You explore, take missions, search for supplies, and investigate what happened. The official site advertises a full day-and-night cycle, changing weather, simulated ballistics, realistic acoustics, and an era-appropriate soundtrack; those are developer-described features, not independent performance measurements.

The setting gives the game a different atmosphere from a conventional military shooter: isolated homes, forests, roads, and bunkers become places to search or move through carefully, while machines make open ground dangerous. The core appeal is the contrast between exploration and the threat of being spotted.

How does combat work?

Stealth and preparation

The game encourages you to decide when to fight, where to engage, and which machine to target first. You can attempt to evade enemies, lure them away, or prepare an ambush rather than treating every sighting as a cue to charge in. The official store description emphasizes choosing battles carefully; that describes the intended tension, not a guarantee that every encounter will feel fair or varied to every player.

Generation Zero - PS4 (PS4)
  • Go it alone, or team-up with up to three friends as you collaborate and combine your unique skills to take down enemies. As you shape your appearance and load-out, your gameplay experience will also evolve. Utilize guerrilla warfare tactics by setting up traps and ambushes. Support downed friends by reviving them, and share the loot after an enemy is defeated
  • All enemies are persistently simulated in the world, and roam the landscape with intent and purpose. When you manage to destroy a specific enemy component, be it armor, weapons or sensory equipment, the damage is permanent. Enemies will bear those scars until you face them again, whether that is minutes, hours or weeks later
  • Experience a full day/night cycle with dynamic weather effects like snowfall, rainstorms and violent winds, all simulated through the award-winning open world engine Apex. This world also features complex AI behavior, simulated ballistics, highly realistic acoustics and a booming soundtrack tailored to the open world
  • Among the loot, you will find outfits and hairstyles to recreate your favorite 1980s style to take on the machines in style. While some items come with stat boosts, and will improve your combat or movement efficiency, others are simply there to let you relive the nostalgic look of the 80s
  • Some enemies are too powerful to attack head-on. Instead, adopt stealth tactics by moving silently, exploiting the enemy's senses and using the environment to your advantage. Shoot out a light and hide in the shadows, use a blaring boombox to draw attention, or find higher ground to stake out an area

Damage that carries between encounters

Generation Zero’s distinctive combat idea is persistent enemy damage. According to the official site, a machine’s damaged or destroyed components—including armor, weapons, and sensory equipment—remain damaged when you meet it again. A fight can therefore be an incremental effort: crippling a machine and retreating may matter later, rather than each encounter resetting it to full strength.

Machine types

The game features several classes of hostile machine, including Ticks, Seekers, Runners, Hunters, Harvesters, and Tanks. The official site presents them as having different behaviors and threats, so identifying what you are facing is part of choosing whether to sneak past, prepare, or commit to a fight.

What do you do between fights?

The loop combines exploration, missions and challenges, searching buildings and bunkers, combat or evasion, and scavenging. Defeated machines can yield parts used to craft equipment, weapons, and ammunition. The Steam listing also advertises building and fortifying bases, giving scavenged resources another use beyond immediate survival. See the Steam product page for its listed features and available additional content.

This mix suits players who enjoy making gradual progress through a hostile world. If you mainly want fast, frequent action with little time spent searching or planning, the game’s emphasis on cautious movement and resource gathering may be a weaker fit.

Can you play Generation Zero solo or with friends?

Both options are supported. The game is playable alone or in seamless co-op with up to three friends, for a total of four players. Its descriptions emphasize sharing loot, combining skills, and reviving downed teammates. The US PlayStation listing specifies one-player play and online play for up to four players; online multiplayer on PlayStation requires PS Plus.

Solo play is a listed option, not a promise that every mission or fight will feel equally comfortable without a team. Co-op offers the social and tactical benefits of coordinating with friends, but you do not need a group just to play the game.

Is Generation Zero still supported, and is it “dead”?

The developer’s Final Dev Letter and FAQ, posted January 29, 2025, says active development is complete and that no new content, patches, or updates are planned. The team wrote: “We are not planning to develop any new content, and the development team is moving on to other projects within Avalanche.” It also said the game would remain available to buy and play.

That announcement does not mean the game instantly became unplayable. The team said multiplayer would continue to work as it did at the time, explaining that sessions are peer-to-peer hosted and do not require the studio’s servers to connect with friends. It also said Procedural Missions and Daily Assignments/FMTEL Missions would keep refreshing, with occasional special events. These are the developer’s statements from January 2025, not guarantees about every future platform, network condition, or service.

Whether “dead” is the right label depends on what you mean: the game has no planned active development according to that announcement, but the developer said it would remain available and multiplayer would continue. No current player-count figure is established here, so it would be misleading to claim how many people play today.

Which platforms and editions are listed?

Official listings cover PC on Steam, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. The US PlayStation page says the PS4 version can be played on PS5 with an enhanced 60 fps experience at no extra cost. That is the PlayStation page’s stated compatibility information; functionality, online requirements, and store availability may differ by region.

The PlayStation page is a digital storefront listing. A collector-market record also lists a PS4 disc edition and a collector’s edition variant, but a current Amazon listing, its stock, condition, region, and included contents have not been verified. If buying a physical copy, check those details on the live seller listing rather than assuming it matches the digital PlayStation Store edition.

Steam PC requirements

These are the requirements shown on Steam, not the result of a fresh compatibility test. Steam also notes that its client supports Windows 10 and later.

What DLC is available?

The Steam page lists story expansions Alpine Unrest and FNIX Rising, along with weapon and equipment packs, base packs, vehicle content, cosmetics, and bundles. The developer described the final Showdown update as free for owners of the base game and said the two story expansions were not required for its new missions, though they add story context. Prices and bundle contents can change, so check the relevant storefront before buying.

Who should buy Generation Zero?

  • Consider it if you like open-world exploration, scavenging, stealth, tactical fights, and the idea of weakening a machine over multiple encounters.
  • Consider co-op if you want to share loot and coordinate with up to three friends; solo play is also listed as supported.
  • Look elsewhere if you want a game with ongoing content updates, or if you prefer consistently fast action over cautious travel and preparation.
  • Check the listing carefully if you want a disc or collector’s edition, since the current availability and exact contents of physical offers are not established here.

There is no reliable current player-count figure or verified live price in the information available for this review, so neither should decide the purchase on its own. Check your platform’s current listing for price, regional availability, and online requirements.
