Earn the Witherhoard Catalyst through The Bank Job: start the quest with Banshee-44, complete its Vault Key, activity, and grenade-launcher objectives, then return to Banshee for the reward. To make progress efficiently, use grenade launchers while completing activities already on your plan, and prioritize Crucible wins only if your live quest tracker awards bonus progress for them. How to start The Bank Job and earn the Catalyst
- Speak to Banshee-44. This starts The Bank Job, the quest for the Witherhoard Catalyst.
- Earn 50 Vault Keys. Defeat combatants with Kinetic or Energy Grenade Launchers. The quest text says rapid combatant defeats give a higher chance to receive a key.
- Complete the activity and weapon objectives shown in your quest tracker. Current database wording lists 300 points through Ops activities, 200 grenade-launcher multikills, and 100 Guardian eliminations with grenade launchers. Crucible wins provide additional progress according to that wording.
- Return to Banshee-44. The quest objectives do not hand over the Catalyst automatically; visit Banshee after all displayed requirements are complete.
How to make progress more efficiently
- Use a Kinetic or Energy Grenade Launcher while pursuing Vault Keys, and keep using grenade launchers for the multikill and Guardian-elimination objectives. This lets weapon objectives overlap with activity progress instead of carrying a weapon that advances none of them.
- Choose activities that the live quest tracker says award points. If it gives extra progress for Crucible wins and Crucible is a good fit for you, prioritize winning matches.
- Check the tracker before settling on a mode. Older guides describe Filthy Lucre and list strikes, Nightfalls, Gambit, and Crucible; newer database wording refers to points and Ops/Portal activities. Older terminology may not match your current quest step, so follow the in-game display rather than assuming those historical descriptions still apply.
No verified comparison establishes a universally fastest playlist or tactic. Your most efficient option depends on which activities currently count for points and where you can also make progress on grenade-launcher kills.

After you receive the Catalyst
Acquiring the Catalyst and unlocking its upgrade are separate steps. Equip Witherhoard and defeat targets with it until its in-game catalyst tracker completes. Bungie’s Witherhoard item definition confirms that weapon defeats unlock the upgrade; it does not give a required count. A community database lists 400 Witherhoard defeats, but check the live tracker rather than relying on that number as current.
Once unlocked, Silent Alarm increases handling and automatically reloads Witherhoard after it has been holstered for a short period. Witherhoard is an Exotic Grenade Launcher whose projectiles blight a target or nearby area on impact; blighted targets take damage over time and blight the nearby area when they die.
