To sync a Wii Remote, use the red SYNC buttons on the remote and console for a Wii or Wii mini. On Wii U, open the controller pairing screen and follow its on-screen prompts. Pairing is complete when a Player LED stops blinking and stays lit.
Sync a Wii Remote to a Wii or Wii mini
Use Standard Mode to save the remote’s connection to the console. The button location differs between Wii models:
- Wii: Open the SD Card Slot cover to find the console’s red SYNC button.
- Wii mini: Find the red SYNC button on the console’s left side, near the battery compartment.
- Turn on the console.
- Open the remote’s battery cover to reach its red SYNC button. Some remote models have an access hole or tool that lets you press the button without removing the cover.
- Press and release the remote’s SYNC button. Its Player LEDs begin blinking.
- While the LEDs are blinking, quickly press and release the console’s red SYNC button.
- Wait for the blinking to stop. A steady Player LED means the remote is synced and shows its player number.
Repeat these steps for each additional remote. Nintendo notes that adding remotes may not work in some applications; exit the application and try again if pairing fails.
Sync a Wii Remote to Wii U
Wii U offers two ways to open controller pairing. Use either route, then press the SYNC button on the remote when prompted.

Using the console’s SYNC button
- From the Wii U Menu, press the console’s SYNC button to display the controller pairing screen.
- Select the controller type shown on screen.
- Press the Wii Remote’s SYNC button. Its Player LED lights when pairing is complete.
Using the GamePad HOME Menu
- Press HOME on the Wii U GamePad.
- Choose Controller Settings, then choose Pair under Wii Remote/Other Controllers.
- Press the Wii Remote’s SYNC button. Remove its jacket first if needed to reach the button; some covers have an access hole.
- Exit pairing and close the HOME Menu.
Nintendo says Wii U can use up to six Wii Remotes and/or four Wii Pro Controllers together with the Wii U GamePad sensor strip or the sensor bar. This is a combined controller limit as stated by Nintendo, not a guarantee that every game supports that many controllers.
Connect a remote temporarily to another Wii
Use One Time Mode when borrowing a remote or changing player order without turning off the console. This temporary pairing does not replace the remote’s Standard Mode connection.

- From the Wii HOME Menu, choose Wii Remote Settings, then Reconnect.
- On the remote you want to connect, press 1 and 2 at the same time.
- For multiple remotes, press 1 and 2 on each remote in the player order you want.
- Wait for the Player LEDs to stop blinking.
The temporary connection ends when the console is powered off, and the remote returns to its Standard Mode connection. Nintendo states that only a Wii Remote in Standard Mode can turn the Wii console on or off.
What the Player LEDs tell you
- Blinking during pairing: The remote is in the connection process.
- One steady light: Pairing is complete; the lit position identifies player 1, 2, 3, or 4.
- One or two flashing lights in Nintendo’s battery indicator guidance: This can indicate low battery. Interpret LED patterns in context rather than treating every flash as a pairing signal.
If the remote will not sync
Work through power and connection basics first, then check the pointing setup if you use pointer controls.

Check the batteries and reset the remote
- Confirm the batteries are inserted in the correct direction and have charge. Nintendo specifies two AA cells and recommends trying a fresh set of alkaline batteries when a remote is unresponsive or will not sync.
- For rechargeable batteries, Nintendo recommends Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH); follow the battery maker’s safety and use instructions.
- To reset, remove the batteries, wait one minute, replace them, then repeat the console’s pairing procedure.
Check the sensor bar and infrared environment
This branch applies when Wii U pointer controls are not working properly; the sensor bar is not needed just to press the SYNC buttons. Check that the sensor bar is plugged in, positioned appropriately, and not damaged. Clear obstructions and inspect the remote’s lens. Sunlight, reflections, and infrared sources such as heaters, fires, or stoves can interfere with pointer operation.
Test another remote
If another remote pairs and works, the original may be faulty. Nintendo identifies the licensed Wii Remote as model RVL-003 and Wii Remote Plus as RVL-036; replacing an unlicensed accessory with a licensed remote may resolve the problem. Check that any replacement is compatible with your console and in suitable condition.
