Ghostwire: Tokyo is worth playing if you want an open-world adventure whose strongest feature is its eerie version of Shibuya. Its elemental combat and folklore-inspired encounters make that city feel distinctive, but the story and side missions are less consistent. It is best approached as a supernatural sightseeing trip, not as an even-strength story-driven action game.
What kind of game is Ghostwire: Tokyo?
Ghostwire: Tokyo is a single-player open-world action-adventure. Akito, bonded with the spirit KK, explores a Tokyo emptied of its people and faces supernatural Visitors. The fictional premise says roughly 200,000 people have vanished; that is an in-game story figure, not a real-world statistic. Steam lists the game as single-player and open world, while Bethesda describes its ghost-hunting skills and elemental abilities.

Why Shibuya is the main attraction
The city is more than a backdrop. Modern Shibuya sits alongside temples, tight alleys, rooftops and streets warped by supernatural forces, giving exploration a strong sense of place. Bethesda’s description highlights Tokyo landmarks, and GameSpot reviewer Richard Wakeling called the open world eerily beautiful in his March 21, 2022 review.
That atmosphere carries the game through stretches where the mission structure feels familiar. Wandering through a carefully staged neighborhood and seeing how the haunting changes it is often more memorable than the activity that sent Akito there.

#1 Best Overall
- A Beautifully Bewitched Tokyo: Explore a unique vision of Tokyo twisted by a supernatural presence. From its ultra-modern cityscape to its traditional temples and narrow alleys, discover a hauntingly beautiful city teeming with Yokai, vengeful spirits roaming the streets.
- Discover iconic landmarks like Shibuya Crossing and Tokyo Tower, surprisingly rendered with incredible detail and designed to take advantage of state-of-the-art technology. Experience the city frozen in time when the city's population disappeared, and travel to the surreal underworld on your quest to save your family.
- Devastating Elemental Skills: wields a combination of upgradeable elemental powers and ghost-hunting skills to combat the supernatural threat. Use your ethereal skills to ascend to the top of Tokyo's skyline and fly over the streets to discover new missions or even get your enemies fall.
How combat and folklore fit together
Akito fights with elemental attacks—fire, wind and water—alongside a bow, talismans, stealth, blocks and close-range core-grab attacks. The different tools give encounters more texture than a single repeated attack would, though the combat’s appeal depends on how much you enjoy returning to its supernatural action loop.
Folklore and urban legends shape the enemies and encounters. The PlayStation Blog describes yokai, spirits, corrupted torii gates and progression connected to collecting spirits. These elements add character to the sightseeing and fighting, but the game is a work of entertainment, not a comprehensive or authoritative guide to Japanese religion or folklore.

Where the experience is less consistent
Wakeling’s GameSpot review praised the distinctive combat and detailed world, while finding weaknesses in the story and side missions. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a claim of universal consensus, but it captures the central trade-off: the setting and unusual combat are stronger draws than consistent narrative or mission quality. Players who want every side activity to deliver a compelling story may find the experience uneven.
Is Ghostwire: Tokyo scary?
It has supernatural and horror elements, but how frightening it feels is subjective. The PlayStation product page includes a Reduced Horror Effects setting, which may help players who want to tone down some effects. The game’s eerie atmosphere is central to its identity; it is not necessary to treat it as a conventional horror game to enjoy it.

Who should play Ghostwire: Tokyo?
- Play it for atmosphere: The detailed, uncanny version of Shibuya is the clearest reason to visit.
- Try it for unusual action: The elemental attacks and ghost-hunting tools give combat a distinctive identity, especially if you enjoy supernatural encounters.
- Temper expectations for the story: The narrative and side missions do not maintain the same consistency as the world’s sense of place.
- Consider your appetite for open-world activity: The game makes exploration central, so it is a better fit if you want to spend time roaming than if you want a tightly paced sequence of story missions.
In his March 21, 2022 review, Wakeling summed up the game’s unusual appeal: “There’s nothing else that can compare to its peculiar brand of open-world exploration and supernatural combat, as it borrows familiar elements and combines them with new ideas in imaginative and surprising ways.”
