Sucker Punch revealed it during PlayStation’s September 24, 2024 State of Play, introducing Atsu, a new protagonist whose story is set in 1603, more than 300 years after Jin Sakai’s. The game launched worldwide for PlayStation 5 on October 2, 2025.
Is Ghost of Yōtei a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima?
It is a franchise follow-up, but not a direct sequel in the story. Sucker Punch says Ghost of Yōtei is a standalone experience and that Jin Sakai does not appear. Who is the new protagonist?
The new protagonist is Atsu. At launch, Sony described her as a haunted, lone mercenary who hunts those responsible for killing her family; her story extends beyond vengeance. That framing comes from Sony’s October 2, 2025 launch announcement.
When and where does the story take place?
The story takes place in 1603 around Mount Yōtei in Ezo, which Sucker Punch identifies as present-day Hokkaido. The developer’s September 2024 announcement places Atsu’s journey more than 300 years after Ghost of Tsushima and describes grasslands, snowy tundra, and dangers across the region. Sucker Punch also said the area was outside Japan’s rule in 1603; that is the studio’s historical framing in its announcement of the game.

What did Sucker Punch say about the new game?
Sucker Punch said it wanted to retain the earlier game’s core ideas: a wandering warrior in feudal Japan, freedom to explore at the player’s pace, and an emphasis on the beauty of the world. The studio looked beyond Jin Sakai and Tsushima to the broader idea of the Ghost, building a new protagonist, story, and region.
The developer also called Ghost of Yōtei its first game built from the ground up for PS5, saying the new setting enabled new mechanics, gameplay improvements, and weapons. Those are the studio’s descriptions of its design and development, not independent performance comparisons.

Ghost of Yōtei launched worldwide for PS5 on October 2, 2025. Sucker Punch says it is exclusive to PS5, supports PS5 Pro, and is not available for PS4. The platform details are in the developer FAQ; Sony confirmed the worldwide launch in its launch announcement.
What editions and hardware did Sony announce?
