Gotham Knights received a mixed critical reception at launch, while Steam’s user ratings show a more favorable lifetime picture alongside a weaker recent snapshot. It is a 2022 open-world action RPG about Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin protecting Gotham after Batman’s death—not an Arkham-series sequel. It can be played solo or online with one other player.
What do the reviews say about Gotham Knights?
There is no single score that captures every review or player opinion. Critic aggregates and storefront user ratings measure different groups, and the numbers change over time.
- Critics at launch: GameSpot’s October 20, 2022 roundup reported a Metacritic score of 70 based on 44 outlets at that time. This is a dated launch-week snapshot, not a current score. GameSpot’s review roundup
- Metacritic reception label: The available platform page describes the reception as “Mixed or Average”; scores and review counts can vary by platform and as reviews are added. Metacritic
- Steam user reviews: On October 8, 2026, Steam showed 70% positive from 11,314 English-language reviews overall, labeled “Mostly Positive.” Its recent snapshot showed 57% positive from 52 English-language reviews, labeled “Mixed.” These are user recommendations, and the recent sample is much smaller than the lifetime one. Those figures should not be combined into one verdict: the Metacritic number is a critic aggregate reported at launch, while Steam’s percentages reflect user reviews at a particular retrieval date.
What kind of Batman game is it?
Gotham Knights puts the Batman Family in the lead after Batman’s death. Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin are playable; Batman is not the playable lead. DC describes the game as an “open-world, action RPG set in the most dynamic and interactive Gotham City yet”—promotional language rather than an independently measured comparison. DC’s game page

The official PlayStation description says the four heroes have different movesets and upgrade paths. Players can switch heroes at the Belfry or complete the story as one character. Combat uses a Momentum meter to unlock special abilities and attacks. DC’s description also presents patrols across five Gotham boroughs and crime-solving as part of the premise. The game is its own take on the Batman Family, so readers looking for a continuation of the Arkham series should not treat it as one. Whether its combat and activities suit someone who prefers another Batman game is a separate question; the available evidence here does not establish a direct, tested comparison.

Can you play Gotham Knights solo or in co-op?
The campaign supports solo play as well as online co-op with one other player. A co-op partner is optional, not a requirement. The official PlayStation page describes the campaign and the four interchangeable heroes; Steam lists single-player and online co-op features.
That makes the main choice one of preference: play alone and focus on a chosen hero, or invite a friend for two-player online play. The presence of co-op alone does not establish that the campaign is better with a partner.

Official listings cover PC and PlayStation 5; the ESRB listing also names Xbox Series. PlayStation lists Standard and Deluxe editions, with the Deluxe edition including the Visionary Pack. Is Gotham Knights worth playing?
It is most likely to appeal to players who want a Gotham story centered on the wider Batman Family, enjoy choosing among distinct heroes, or want the option of online co-op. Players who specifically want Batman as the lead, or are selecting a game based on a particular Arkham-style combat feel, should weigh those preferences separately rather than infer a match from the setting.
For content suitability, the ESRB rates Gotham Knights Teen. Its descriptors include Blood, Language, Use of Alcohol and Tobacco, Violence, and in-game purchases. The ESRB listing names Windows PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. ESRB rating
