The official announcement confirmed the trailer was available; it did not explain Rockstar’s precise timing or say how quickly the company responded.
What happened to the GTA 6 trailer?
Rockstar had announced in November 2023 that the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would arrive in early December. The planned premiere was December 5 at 9 a.m. ET. On December 4, a leaked version circulated on X, and Rockstar subsequently published its official Trailer 1 ahead of the scheduled debut, according to TIME’s contemporaneous report.
So, in the straightforward sense, the trailer came out early because a leak appeared before its planned premiere. The available reporting establishes that sequence, but not that the leak was the sole reason for Rockstar’s decision or exactly how quickly the company acted.
GTA 6 trailer release timeline
| Date and time | What was announced or reported |
|---|---|
| November 8, 2023 | Sam Houser announced that the first trailer for the next Grand Theft Auto would arrive in early December. GameSpot reported the announcement. |
| December 5, 2023, 9 a.m. ET | The scheduled premiere time, as reported by TIME. |
| December 4, 2023 | A leaked version circulated on X before the planned premiere; Rockstar then published its official trailer. Take-Two’s press release, dated December 4 at 7:10 p.m. EST, was headed “Watch Trailer 1 Now.” The official announcement and TIME’s report establish the date and sequence. |
The sources establish that the leak and official release happened on December 4, before the planned premiere. They do not establish the exact time the leak first appeared or the exact time the official video went live, so a more precise minute-by-minute timeline is not supported.

What Rockstar’s official announcement confirmed
Take-Two Interactive’s December 4, 2023 release said Grand Theft Auto VI was coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S in 2025. It described the setting as the state of Leonida, home to Vice City. Those are details from the 2023 announcement, not a current release-date update.
In the announcement, Rockstar founder Sam Houser said: “Grand Theft Auto VI continues our efforts to push the limits of what’s possible in highly immersive, story-driven open-world experiences.” He added: “We’re thrilled to be able to share this new vision with players everywhere.”
