Its main draw is the way those images become both the puzzle language and the storytelling—not inventory, dialogue trees, or conventional action. If you enjoy visual problem-solving and are happy to discover the narrative through images, it is a strong fit; the official storefront descriptions establish the concept, but they are not a substitute for a hands-on review.
What kind of game is Gorogoa?
Gorogoa is a puzzle game designed and illustrated by Jason Roberts. Steam identifies Buried Signal as developer and Annapurna Interactive as publisher. Its story is presented through illustrated panels rather than a conventional, text-forward format. Steam describes the play as arranging and combining those panels to solve puzzles; that image-led approach is the game’s defining feature.

The publisher’s Steam description calls the gameplay “wholly original” and says players arrange and combine lavishly illustrated panels “in imaginative ways to solve puzzles.” That is promotional storefront language, not an independent review. PlayStation’s product description similarly calls it an “elegant evolution of the puzzle genre” and credits Roberts with designing and illustrating the hand-drawn story.
How do Gorogoa’s puzzles work?
You manipulate illustrated panels and look for relationships between their contents. Moving or layering images can make separate scenes connect, revealing a path or changing what happens next. The challenge is less about collecting items or following explicit instructions than noticing visual details and testing how one image might relate to another.

#1 Best Overall
- Exclusive Physical Edition.
- Gorogoa is an elegant evolution of the puzzle genre, told through a beautifully hand-drawn story.
- Innovative Package Design by Gorogoa creator, Jason Roberts, including “Traditions of the Scattered Path” booklet w/ brand new original artwork.
That design makes the artwork functional as well as expressive: the details you study are part of the puzzle system, while the sequence of images carries the story. Explaining specific solutions would spoil the discovery at the heart of the game, so go in expecting to observe, experiment, and infer rather than follow a step-by-step clue trail.
Is Gorogoa worth playing?
It is worth considering if you like carefully composed art, puzzles that reward close observation, and stories that leave room for interpretation. Its most distinctive idea—connecting and combining illustrated panels—is also its central commitment. Players who prefer explicit narrative exposition, a large set of mechanics, or action-focused gameplay may find that approach less engaging.
The official Steam listing reports that Gorogoa won the 2018 BAFTA Debut Game award and two 2018 Game Developers Choice Awards: Best Mobile Game and Innovation Award. Those awards help explain its recognition, but they do not determine whether its particular visual puzzle style will suit you.
