“Greatsword” is a broad modern label, not one fixed historical sword type. The term can refer to different large swords across periods and regions, so a useful comparison starts with the object’s date, origin, design, and intended use—not its name alone.
What counts as a greatsword?
Historical terminology overlaps. The Fitzwilliam Museum, for example, labels a hand-and-a-half sword a “Great sword,” “War Sword,” and “Great Espee d’Allegmagne,” while cautioning that it should not be confused with two-handed swords. That makes “greatsword” a poor shortcut for identifying a single historical form.
Here, the term is used broadly for large swords designed to be wielded with two hands, while distinguishing particular examples by period, region, and construction. A hand-and-a-half sword, a late-medieval two-handed sword, a German Zweihänder, and a Scottish claymore are not interchangeable just because modern writing may group them under a similar label.
What did a historical two-handed sword look like?
A late-medieval example
The Metropolitan Museum of Art records a British or Western European two-handed sword dated circa 1400–1450. It measures 146.1 cm overall, with a 109.9 cm blade, and weighs 2,354 g (about 5 lb 3 oz). The Met describes a double-edged blade with an acute point and flattened diamond cross-section; the weapon was intended for two-handed use.

The blade’s point and geometry reflect a period when plate armor was becoming increasingly sophisticated. The Met connects the design to both thrusting and slashing against fully articulated armor. This is a documented object, not a universal template or standard specification for every greatsword.
Large did not necessarily mean unwieldy
The idea that every two-handed sword was an oversized, crude blade is misleading. The Met says that large two-handed “swords of war” from the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries rarely weighed more than 10 lb. “Rarely” is not “never,” and the statement does not establish a maximum weight for every sword. The Met’s circa 1400–1450 example, at 5 lb 3 oz, shows how a substantial weapon could still have a defined purpose and carefully shaped blade.

How did their roles differ over time?
There was no single timeline in which all two-handed swords moved from battlefield weapons to ceremonial objects. The Met’s late-medieval example is associated with thrusting and slashing against armored opponents. Other records describe specialist infantry uses and later ceremonial or bodyguard roles for particular forms.
The Walters Art Museum describes a German two-handed form known as a Zweihänder and notes a shift toward ceremonial and bodyguard use after firearms became established by the end of the 1500s. The Cleveland Museum of Art similarly describes enormous two-handed swords taking largely ceremonial or bodyguard roles by the late 1600s. These accounts concern specific forms and contexts; they should not be treated as the history of every large sword.

How can you tell two greatswords apart?
Start with the object rather than the label. A meaningful comparison considers:
- Date and region: A British or Western European sword from circa 1400–1450 is not automatically comparable to a later German-speaking Zweihänder or another regional form.
- Intended use: Look for evidence of armor-oriented combat, specialist infantry use, or later ceremonial and bodyguard roles.
- Construction and handling: Overall length, blade geometry, grip, weight, and balance are more informative than a broad label by itself.
- Evidence behind the interpretation: The Nationaal Militair Museum describes studying two-handed swords through shape and balance analysis, practical archaeology, X-ray testing, and wear marks. Such evidence helps researchers infer how an object may have functioned; the name alone cannot settle the question.
Are modern greatsword replicas historical originals?
No. A replica is a modern-made object inspired by a historical weapon, not an antique. The Royal Armouries Museum Shop describes a Windlass collaboration replica of a mid-fifteenth-century two-handed sword, made from modern 1080 high-carbon steel and described as fully tempered and distally tapered. Those are product-specific claims, not evidence that replicas generally match originals in every respect.

A replica’s historical appearance does not establish that it is suitable for sparring or other contact training. Check the specific item’s stated intended use, construction, dimensions, seller, and applicable local rules; do not assume that a display replica is a training weapon.
