Yes. EA gave away Battlefield 3 through Origin’s On the House promotion in May 2014. That limited-time offer has ended; EA’s current product page lists the game for purchase, not as a free claim.
Was Battlefield 3 really free on Origin?
Yes. EA confirmed the promotion in two announcements: its Italian post on May 29, 2014, described Battlefield 3 as completely free for a limited time, and its French post the next day also confirmed the free Origin offer. EA said that adding the game to an Origin library made it available to play later. Read EA’s May 29 announcement and EA’s May 30 announcement.

When did the free offer end?
The promotion was temporary. EA’s Italian announcement called it limited-time but does not give a closing date in the retrieved text. A Whirlpool community post from May 2014 reported that the offer lasted until June 4; that specific cutoff comes from secondary reporting, not the EA announcement. See the contemporaneous forum post.
Can you still claim Battlefield 3 for free?
No. The 2014 On the House giveaway is over. EA’s product page, accessed October 8, 2026, presents Battlefield 3 as a game for purchase, including on the EA app for Windows. It also names Steam, PC and Xbox in its platform information. Check EA’s page for current purchase options and price, which can change: Battlefield 3 on EA.
