PC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteIf God of War Ragnarök flickers or briefly loses its picture on PS5, first check whether the image itself is flickering or the display is losing its HDMI signal. Reseat the cable, then test PS5 video settings one at a time: PlayStation specifically recommends trying Video Transfer Rate at -1 or -2, while Elgato suggests turning off 120 Hz Output for this game and relaunching it. These are troubleshooting steps, not guaranteed fixes; the cause can depend on your TV or monitor and connection setup.
First, identify what the screen is doing
“Flickering” can describe different symptoms, and they do not necessarily have the same cause. Watch what happens during gameplay and when starting or closing the game:
- Visible flicker during gameplay: The image remains on screen, but brightness or parts of the picture fluctuate.
- Brief loss of signal: The display goes black or shows a “no signal” message, then returns. This can happen during a video-mode change, but repeated dropouts need troubleshooting.
- Only at launch or exit: Note whether the display recovers on its own and whether the problem occurs in gameplay too.
There is no established single cause for every report of Ragnarök flickering on PS5. A symptom limited to one game, a signal interruption, and flicker across multiple games may point to different parts of the setup.
Check the HDMI connection before changing settings
- Turn off the console and display, then reseat the HDMI cable at both ends.
- Try another HDMI port on the TV or monitor. If the PS5 connects through a receiver or another intermediary, connect it directly to the display temporarily to see whether the symptom changes.
- If available, test with a known-good cable. For 4K/120 Hz output, PlayStation recommends the cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for that output. A replacement is not automatically necessary: check the existing cable and connection path first. See PlayStation’s 4K and 120 Hz connection guidance and Bethesda’s general PS5 flickering-black-screen advice.
Try PS5 video settings one at a time
After each change, relaunch Ragnarök or revisit the same scene. This makes it easier to tell which setting, if any, changes the symptom. Menu labels can vary slightly with system software, but the paths below follow PlayStation’s documented PS5 menus.

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
Lower Video Transfer Rate
- On PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Video Transfer Rate.
- Try -1. If flicker continues, test -2.
- Return to the same scene and check whether the flicker or signal loss changes.
PlayStation explicitly recommends trying -1 or -2 when the screen flickers, saying the setting limits output and may improve picture quality. Limiting output can also restrict some high-bandwidth combinations, so this may reduce access to certain output modes. The result depends on the display and setup. See PlayStation’s resolution and video-output guidance.
Turn off 120 Hz Output for Ragnarök
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > 120 Hz Output.
- Set it to Off, then relaunch God of War Ragnarök.
Elgato’s game-specific troubleshooting article suggests this when video is not displaying properly in Ragnarök. Treat it as a compatibility test, not a verified fix for every PS5, display model, or kind of flicker. Turning 120 Hz off means giving up that output mode while testing. Read Elgato’s PS5 setup guidance.

Test with VRR off
If the cable checks, transfer-rate options, and 120 Hz test do not help, try disabling Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) temporarily. Use the PS5’s Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output menu to locate the VRR control, then test the same scene again. The exact available options depend on the connected display.
Sony notes that slight brightness fluctuations can occur with VRR depending on the frequency of the console’s output. Naughty Dog’s display troubleshooting also recommends checking display firmware and, for problems associated with VRR and/or 120 Hz, disabling VRR as a test. Disabling it may remove VRR behavior while it is off; whether that changes the symptom varies by display. PlayStation’s connection guidance, Naughty Dog’s VRR/120 Hz display troubleshooting, and Sony’s TV guidance on video game consoles describe these considerations.

If the flickering continues
- Check whether the TV or monitor has a firmware update, following the display maker’s instructions.
- Record the display model, which HDMI port and cable you used, whether the console connects through a receiver, and which video settings you tested.
- Note whether the issue happens only in Ragnarök, in other games too, or only while launching or closing the game.
- If the problem persists across settings or games, contact PlayStation or the display maker with those details. PlayStation directs users with resolution issues to its repair diagnostic tool: PlayStation PS5 resolution support.
Disabling HDR or changing resolution is not established here as a universal remedy. Avoid changing several settings at once: it makes it harder to identify whether a particular output mode or connection change helped.
