Valve’s Half-Life 2 20th Anniversary Update folds Episode One and Episode Two into the main game, adds 3.5 hours of developer commentary and Steam Workshop support, and refreshes maps, controls, and menus. The update was announced on November 15, 2024, ahead of the game’s November 16, 2004 release anniversary. The limited free-to-own promotion ended November 18, 2024; it is not an active anniversary offer.
What’s included in Half-Life 2 now?
The anniversary build brings the two episodic follow-ups into Half-Life 2’s package and main-menu flow. Completing the base game leads into Episode One, then Episode Two. Lost Coast is available from the Extras menu. Valve says the standalone Episode One, Episode Two, and Lost Coast applications remain available for community projects, although they are less visible in the Steam Store and can be found under Library’s Tools menu.

What changed in the anniversary update?
Maps, visuals, and restored details
Valve says its level designers reviewed every map to fix longstanding issues and restore content or features that had been lost over time. The release notes cover fixes for visual pops, holes, disappearing objects, missing grass sprites, lighting mismatches, and decals. They also list changes involving lightmap resolution and fog, plus options for classic blood and fire effects, radial fog, higher-detail models, and smoother shadows using bicubic lightmap filtering.

Controls, menus, and display
Gamepad controls and aim assistance have been updated. Aim assistance can be configured separately for gamepad and mouse-and-keyboard input. The Steam Deck menu exposes the Episodes, Workshop, and input options; Valve says the same gamepad-friendly interface is available in Big Picture mode on PC. Other listed changes include UI scaling for higher resolutions and ultrawide support updates to the Crossbow and RPG models. These are features Valve lists, not independent performance or hardware test results.
Commentary, Workshop, and Steam features
The update adds 3.5 hours of developer commentary and integrated Steam Workshop support. It also adds Steam Game Recording events. Valve’s announcement describes the commentary and feature additions in its Steam announcement.

Which Half-Life 2 build should you play?

Valve keeps the earlier version in Steam’s public steam_legacy beta branch and recommends it as a compatibility fallback rather than a generally superior version. The announcement does not establish that every older mod requires it.
How to access the pre-anniversary build
- In your Steam Library, right-click Half-Life 2 and choose Properties.
- Open Betas and select the public
steam_legacybranch, labeled “Pre-20th Anniversary Build.” - Allow Steam to update the game, then launch it. To return to the anniversary build, choose the default branch in the same menu.
Branch labels and Steam’s interface can change, so follow the current labels shown in the game’s Properties window if they differ.

Where to watch the anniversary documentary and find development footage
Valve invited Secret Tape, which made the Half-Life 25th-anniversary documentary, to create a film focused on Half-Life 2. Valve’s description says the documentary covers production and the circumstances around the game, including running out of money, a hack and early-build leak, a lawsuit from the publisher, and the effort to build Steam. The film and archived material are linked from Valve’s anniversary page.
The page also features recovered development presentations: SIGGRAPH 2000 material, an E3 2002 demo Valve says it had not been ready to show, and the E3 2003 public reveal. These recordings offer a different kind of history from the documentary: early demonstrations show how the game was presented and developed, while the film recounts more of its production story.

Can you still get Half-Life 2 free for the anniversary?
No. Valve’s free-to-own promotion was temporary and ended November 18, 2024, at 10 a.m. Pacific. The anniversary announcement’s offer is historical; it should not be mistaken for a current giveaway. Current Steam pricing is not established here.

Valve announced that Raising the Bar would return in 2025 as an expanded second edition, with coverage of the Episodes and previously unseen concept art. It is a separate development-history book, not part of the game update. The announcement does not establish its current publication details, stock, or retail availability, so check a current publisher or retailer listing before relying on it.

What else is on the anniversary page?
Valve says the Half-Life 2, Episode One, and Episode Two soundtracks are free to stream or download through the anniversary page. The page does not establish physical soundtrack availability.
Valve thanked players in its Steam announcement: “To everyone who has played Half-Life 2 over the last twenty years, thank you.”
