That number is historical, not the petition’s current displayed total: the Change.org page snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, showed 126,601 verified signatures. The campaign’s claims about cultural appropriation and whitewashing are allegations made by petitioners, not findings established by the petition or the reporting cited here.
What is the Genshin Impact petition about?
The petition, titled “Stop Cultural Appropriation and Whitewashing in MiHoYo Games,” was created on Change.org on July 7, 2024. It asks MiHoYo to commit to what campaigners call respectful and accurate representation across its games. Its opening appeal says: “We call on MiHoYo to stop cultural appropriation and whitewashing in their games and to commit to respectful and accurate representation of all cultures.” The petition page records the campaign’s position and requests; it does not independently establish the developer’s intent or settle the cultural criticism.
What does the petition ask MiHoYo to do?
The campaign calls for three concrete steps:
- Engage Indigenous cultural consultants.
- Review and revise existing game content.
- Create more diverse and inclusive characters.
Petitioners point to character designs and cultural influences in Sumeru and Natlan in Genshin Impact, as well as Penacony in Honkai: Star Rail. They argue that Indigenous cultures were drawn on without sufficient representation or respect. Those are the campaign’s allegations; the cited sources do not independently verify them.
Why did the petition gain attention in July 2024?
The discussion became prominent after Genshin Impact revealed three Natlan characters in July 2024. Video Games Chronicle reported on July 17 that the petition had reached 65,000 signatures and described criticism of the designs, including public comments from voice actors. Amber May, a voice actor for Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, wrote: “Politely asking to see more accuracy in a portrayed culture is not a ‘forced agenda’,” as quoted by VGC. VGC also quoted Allegra Clark, a voice actor for both games, saying: “It’s just so disappointing when parts of the world that are so seldom reflected in media could’ve portrayed accurately. I know this is ‘inspired by,’ as opposed to a 1:1 depiction, but if you’re drawing on specific sources it would be so lovely to see it one the way it should be!”

How many signatures did it have?
Published totals are dated snapshots, not competing measurements of the same moment. Reports around the milestone give different counts:
| Reported total | When and source |
|---|---|
| More than 63,000 | As of July 16, 2024, according to Know Your Meme. |
| 60,915, including 16,042 collected that day | Reported July 17, 2024, by a GameSpot-branded article, which also listed a 75,000-signature target: GameSpot. |
| 65,000 | Reported July 17, 2024, by Video Games Chronicle. |
| 126,601 verified signatures | Displayed on the Change.org petition page in the snapshot accessed October 8, 2026. |
The dated reports confirm the petition’s rapid growth, but do not establish the exact time its counter crossed 75,000. The title’s 75,000 figure should therefore be understood as a historical milestone, not as the latest count.
