Grounded 2 update 0.2, “Hairy and Scary,” added the AXL tarantula boss, new armor and building items, the BUILD.M construction interface, and a set of combat, quality-of-life, graphics, and stability changes. Obsidian announced the update on September 30, 2025. This is a guide to that release, not a claim that 0.2 is the game’s current version.

Where and when update 0.2 launched

Obsidian announced Hairy and Scary on September 30, 2025. At launch, it was available in Game Preview on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, and Xbox Cloud, and in Early Access on Steam; the official notes also list Xbox Game Pass as an access route. Obsidian’s announcement and full patch notes and Xbox Wire’s launch announcement describe the release. These are launch-period details, not confirmation of current availability or subscription terms.

What new content did Hairy and Scary add?

AXL, the tarantula boss

The headline addition is AXL, a tarantula boss. Players can summon the fight using an offering recipe found in the world. The rewards and related unlocks listed in the notes include Tarantula Armor, a spear, a great bow and arrows, two trinkets, and a new mutation. Players can also obtain AXL-themed furnishings and décor: a candle, throne, chest, stuffed AXL, and wall mount.

Praying Mantis armor and building additions

The update adds a Praying Mantis Armor set and several construction pieces. New items include a Wolf Spider Rug; Grass Quarter Triangle and Stem Quarter Triangle floors; Pine Wall B, Pine Half Wall B, Pine Half Vertical Wall B, Pine Table, Pine Stool, Pine Lounger, and Pine Skull Mount; plus a Scorpion Bed and Scorpion Lamp.

October Halloween event

For October, the update added a seasonal event: a Trick-or-Treatery Building available for purchase at the Ranger Station, spooky ambience, and Candy Corn replacing some resources in the world. This was October-only content in the 0.2 notes; those notes do not establish whether the event is available in a later year.

What changed in building and everyday play?

BUILD.M replaces the Construction radial

The Construction radial was replaced by BUILD.M, changing how players access building options. The update also made set-bonus information available through the Explore popup.

Buggy and interaction improvements

  • Hotpouch access is available while riding a Buggy, and Hotpouch remains available in the inventory screen.
  • Orb Weaver Buggies no longer take fall damage, and their navigation was improved.
  • Repair feedback for Buggies was improved, and SCA.B now emits a small light at night.
  • Feedback for throwing begins when the input is pressed; lean-to interaction feedback was also improved.

Combat balance changes

Obsidian described this as a preliminary combat pass before tier 3 content. It aimed to rein in gear and mutations that were especially powerful against AXL, but the notes include buffs as well as reductions. The effects depend on the weapon, mutation, and enemy involved; the patch is not accurately summarized as a universal nerf.

Global and weapon adjustments

  • Critical-hit and stun multipliers were reduced, as was baseline parry stun; light shields gained more stun.
  • Rogue Armor’s critical-hit chance was slightly reduced. Dual-wield finale damage was slightly reduced.
  • Critical-hit chances were adjusted for Weaver Daggers, Wolfsbane Daggers, Ice Sickles, Mosquito Needle, Mitey Claws, and Northern Shredders. Fist-weapon stun was reduced.
  • Bow damage changes from the public test were reversed. Tier 1 and Tier 2 arrow base damage increased by 5, with the increase doubled for charged attacks.
  • Pinch Whacker area-of-effect stun changed from 15 to 5, and its area damage was slightly reduced.
  • Stabby Stinger gained bonus stabbing damage with finishers. Blistering Boiler’s spicy damage and sizzle were reduced, while the Myrmecologist Badge’s attack-damage downside was reduced.
  • Northern Armor’s Crippling Strike now briefly immobilizes rather than stuns; its Ambush attacks work only on angry creatures. Grub Armor’s Quickcharge bonus is no longer removed when switching weapons.

Mutation and creature adjustments

  • Ambush dagger critical damage was reduced, and Ambush effects and unlock progress were limited to angry creatures.
  • Assassin’s Dash Strike critical chance and dagger/sickle critical damage were reduced. Sharpshooter’s charged-shot critical chance was reduced; Lil Fist mastery stun was slightly reduced.
  • Smasher damage against stunned creatures increased. Reliable Friend’s revive time was adjusted, and Acorn Turret damage against O.R.C. creatures was reduced.
  • Bombardier Beetles now resist stabbing rather than smashing and have reduced fresh weakness. Wolf Spiders have greater stabbing resistance and more health; Praying Mantis health increased.

Graphics, localization, and stability

Update 0.2 added or adjusted graphics options for view distance, anti-aliasing, post-processing, shadows, global illumination, reflections, textures, effects, foliage, and shading. Global illumination can be switched on or off, with quality options available when enabled. The release also included general performance improvements.

Obsidian’s notes estimated “around a 15% Stability Gain from 0.1.3.” That is the developer’s estimate, not an independently validated benchmark, and the announcement said stability work would continue. The official 0.2 notes contain the estimate.

Japanese and Brazilian Portuguese localization were announced with the update. Xbox Wire quoted Obsidian Senior Communications Manager Shyla Schofield: “Not only that, but we are excited to announce Japanese and Brazilian localization have been added to Grounded 2 with this update.” Xbox Wire’s announcement uses that wording.

Known issues and notable fixes in the 0.2 notes

Known issues players could encounter

  • Resources regrew once across saves after reports that large resources beneath bases were not regrowing. Players might need to chop resources again beneath their bases.
  • Players who left the public test early could load into 0.2 with the field of view set to zero. Obsidian advised moving the FOV slider on first launch.

Selected fixes

The full patch notes contain a much longer list. Notable fixes addressed crashes and memory leaks, GPU hangs, backpacks falling underground after death, equipment loss on save import, duplication methods, resource respawning on high foundations, client repair failures, terrain gaps at the edge of the world, and a photo-mode speed exploit. The notes also fixed a case where a two-handed weapon could disappear if a player’s inventory was full while on a Buggy.

Other listed fixes covered Steam Deck startup, multiplayer join freezes, frame-rate drops in specific situations, UI and audio-setting issues, and numerous Buggy behaviors. Consult Obsidian’s complete 0.2 patch notes for the full fix list.
