Did a Hacker Ban Thousands of Call of Duty Players With a RICOCHET Exploit?

A hacker claimed a RICOCHET flaw let them trigger bans by messaging players with cheat-related text. The claim of thousands affected is unverified, while Activision reportedly said a bug affected a small number of legitimate accounts.

A hacker called Vizor claimed that a flaw in Call of Duty’s RICOCHET anti-cheat system let them trigger bans by sending players messages containing cheat-related text. The claim that “thousands upon thousands” were affected has not been independently verified. TechCrunch reported that Activision said it had fixed a bug affecting a “small number of legitimate player accounts”—a substantially narrower description that does not establish the exploit’s total reach.

What did the hacker claim happened?

In a November 7, 2024 report, TechCrunch said Vizor described an exploit involving text strings that RICOCHET allegedly used as cheat signatures. According to Vizor, sending a string such as “Trigger Bot” to another player in an in-game private message could cause that player to be banned. Vizor told TechCrunch they first tested the method by messaging themselves, then automated a process of joining games, sending messages, and moving to another game. These are Vizor’s claims, not a published technical demonstration or independently reproduced finding. TechCrunch’s report also said a former Activision employee familiar with the company’s security and anti-cheat work believed signature scanning may have been weaponized. The source spoke anonymously and did not verify how many players were affected.

Did the exploit ban thousands of players?

That scale is unconfirmed. Vizor told TechCrunch they had affected “thousands upon thousands” of players, but the available reporting does not provide an independently verified victim count. TechCrunch said Activision had reported fixing a bug that affected a “small number of legitimate player accounts.” The two descriptions differ, and the public information cited in these reports does not resolve the gap or establish how many accounts were affected or later restored.

PC Gamer’s November 8 follow-up recounted the alleged message-based technique. It is further coverage of the claim, not independent confirmation of the number.

Could a private message really get someone banned?

The reported vulnerability, if described accurately, was not that a message itself proved the recipient was cheating. Vizor’s account was that RICOCHET’s alleged string-matching behavior could mistake text in a message for a cheat signature. TechCrunch reported Activision had fixed a related bug affecting some legitimate accounts, but the public reporting cited here does not include an official technical postmortem explaining exactly how the flaw worked.

Activision’s later descriptions of its anti-cheat process provide useful context, but they do not verify the details of the 2024 incident. In a 2023 RICOCHET report, Activision said machine-learning systems provide information for account decisions but do not issue bans; the team validates for accuracy. In March 2025, Team RICOCHET explained that Limited Matchmaking is an alarm requiring examination, not confirmation that an account is cheating. That distinction matters: being placed in Limited Matchmaking is not, by itself, proof of a cheating finding.

Were the Call of Duty bans reversed?

The reports cited here do not establish how many exploit-affected players were unbanned or whether every affected account was restored. Activision’s reported statement that the bug was fixed and had affected a small number of legitimate accounts is not a published count of reversals. The evidence does not support a definitive number for bans reversed.

How should the later RICOCHET figures be read?

Activision’s later enforcement statistics describe other activity and should not be treated as measurements of this exploit. In its March 2025 update, Team RICOCHET reported more than 228,000 bans since the release of Black Ops 6 and said 23% of cheaters had been removed before their first match. The same update said more than 60% of received cheater reports in Call of Duty: Warzone had been against console players; that figure describes reports, not confirmed cheating. The March 2025 update presents these as enforcement and reporting figures, not as an accounting of the 2024 message exploit.

A September 2025 update said in-game mitigations disrupted more than 55,000 cheaters in August, and discussed planned Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 requirements for Black Ops 7. These later measures provide franchise context; they do not show what caused or fixed the earlier bug. Activision’s September 2025 update also described its bug bounty and security disclosure program.

What is established—and what remains a claim?

  • Vizor’s account: The alleged exploit used cheat-related text strings in private messages, and Vizor claimed “thousands upon thousands” were affected. Neither the method nor the total is independently verified by the cited reporting.
  • Limited corroboration: TechCrunch quoted an anonymous former Activision employee who said signature scanning may have been weaponized. That does not confirm the alleged victim count.
  • Activision’s reported statement: TechCrunch said Activision had fixed a bug affecting a “small number of legitimate player accounts.” It is not a public postmortem or a verified tally of bans and reversals.
  • Later official context: Activision’s descriptions of decision review and Limited Matchmaking explain that an investigation signal is not the same as confirmation of cheating; they do not prove what happened in this specific incident.
