It broadens the search and may improve queue times and skill matching. If connection latency matters more, Local limits matches to your region and may improve ping—but can mean longer waits and less fair matches. Neither setting guarantees balanced teams or fixes every matchmaking complaint.
How to change Halo Infinite’s Search Region
- Open Settings in Halo Infinite.
- Go to Gameplay → Matchmaking → Search Region.
- Select Expanded for a broader search, or Local to restrict the search to your region.
Halo’s game settings guide describes the two options and their possible effects. If a Local search is taking too long, Halo’s Winter Update recommends re-enabling Expanded.
Expanded vs. Local: what changes?

These are tradeoffs, not guaranteed outcomes. The best choice can depend on region, time of day, and party size. Changing Search Region does not disable skill-based matchmaking, guarantee even teams, or ensure a low-ping match.
What happens when you play in a fireteam?
The fireteam leader’s Search Region setting is used. If members are in different regions, Halo says matchmaking selects one region intended to balance the group’s experience. Changing the setting on a non-leader’s account therefore may not change the search.

Why matchmaking can still feel uneven
Halo has acknowledged frustration with ranked matchmaking in past updates. Its Playlist & Challenge Update described changes that prioritized closer individual-skill matches, prioritized lower-latency Big Team Battle matches, and extended the matchmaking timeout from five minutes to ten. Those were changes reported at that time; they do not establish the exact current system or explain a particular match today.
A later Ranked Update described matchmaking as a balance among skill, latency, and time to match, with time of day, region, search setting, and party size also affecting the search. It reported that upwards of 95% of players in Ranked Arena searched solo or duo in that update’s context. That historical figure is not a current population statistic.

Some community posts describe lopsided teams, including one player’s account of “1 good player with 3 bots vs 4 competent players.” Such posts illustrate individual experiences; they do not measure how common the problem is across the player base.
