Halo Infinite added third-person camera options in its November 2024 Winter Update, but the matchmaking launch was limited to a rotating Firefight playlist—not a universal third-person setting for multiplayer. Custom Games and Forge also gained ways to configure the view. A later Fall 2025 announcement described perspective toggles for a broader list of Firefight modes.
What changed in November 2024
The Winter Update made third-person camera an official game-mode option. In Custom Games, a host could set the perspective for everyone in the lobby. Forge creators could use a scripting node to require third-person for a mode or map, applying it to all players or a selected group. Halo outlined these options in its Forge Overview for the Winter Update 2024 and Winter Update patch notes.
That meant third-person was not merely a Theater viewing angle or a mod. It was a camera option that creators and Custom Game hosts could configure, with a narrower matchmaking rollout.

Custom Games
The host controlled the perspective for the lobby through the game-mode options. The setting was lobby-wide rather than an individual player preference.

Forge
Forge’s scripting node let creators require third-person for a mode or map. It could affect everyone or a selected group of players, offering more control than the Custom Games lobby setting.
Matchmaking
The matchmaking debut was a rotational playlist, “3P Firefight: King of the Hill.” Halo’s Great Journey launch announcement listed four third-person matchmaking options: Firefight: King of the Hill, Fiestafight: King of the Hill, Gruntpocalypse: King of the Hill, and Gruntpocalypse Fiesta: King of the Hill. The Winter Update patch notes said the playlist was scheduled to rotate out on December 3, 2024; that was the announced launch schedule, not a statement about availability today.

How the Firefight option changed in Fall 2025
Halo’s Fall Update 2025 announcement described a change to how Firefight perspectives were handled: instead of splitting modes into separate first-person and third-person variants, players could toggle perspectives within the listed Firefight modes. The announcement covered Firefight KOTH, Linear Firefight, Gruntpocalypse, and Fiesta variants across the stated difficulty settings, so players with different preferences could play together.
This later announcement expands the Firefight use case; it does not establish third-person support across all Halo Infinite multiplayer modes or PvP playlists. Nor does the announcement alone confirm which playlists are currently live.

Yes, in the supported contexts: Custom Games and Forge received configuration options in November 2024, and matchmaking launched with a rotating Firefight playlist. Halo later announced perspective toggles for a defined set of Firefight modes. The available official announcements do not support describing third person as a universal setting for every multiplayer mode.
